Is it just someone who looks like him? Is that some sort of tradition?

3. it's when someone shows the new guy the way.
In the case of the returning senators, each person gets to have one other senator with them. It is often a committee leader or other senior member from their party.

6. but Hoyer is in the house right now, i don't think he can run that fast from
one chamber to another. I could be wrong.
