Time for another DU flower purchase
I think it would be apropos to fill Nancy Pelosi's new office with DU flowers, as we did for Sen. Boxer and Helen Thomas.

Would whoever has done the organizing before be willing to do it again, or would someone else step forward and do the honors? We'll need someone actually in DC, I believe, to make the delivery arrangements and possibly be there to arrange the flowers. I don't know how it was done for Sen. Boxer, but I know someone did that for Helen.

I can't send flowers if impeachment is off the table. So I just send her my best wishes.

Maybe we should send her a ton of these instead of flowers. They'd last longer and she could give them out to visitors.

On edit:
I found it.

56. People still don't have a fricking clue - shameful
I have a salt & pepper shaker that's off my table mainly because my cats will get on the table and knock the shakers around making a mess. But if I happen to need salt & pepper I can go to the cupboard and get it. Normally I like to do an investigation first to determine if I even want Salt & Pepper on my food because personally, nothing sucks more than Salting & Peppering my food and then trying to choke it down because it was oversalted and overpeppered.

Impeachment is just like that Salt & Pepper - we don't need it on the table. To be honest, it'll do nothing but get in our way of making changes in this country, helping working class folks, ending this war and investigating the crimes of the Bush Administration. But just like tasting your food first, if we investigate and we bring to light all the crimes of the Regime trust me, not only will democrats want to bring the 'Salt & Pepper' to the table, but so will some of the moderate leaning republicans who want to save their asses for 2008 elections.

HOWEVER, just like my cats making a mess with the shakers, so will the media if we start screaming IMPEACHMENT before we even present to the voters, the public and the world why we should impeach in the first place. And the media is NOT in our favor.

So please open your eyes to what is happening. Have you heard one democrat out there say we shouldn't bother investigating the administration? Nope - Everyone is jumping on board, hell in my own senator Biden is getting on the bandwagon and I ain't complaining.

So relax and appreciate what is happening. It's already reported that the Bush Regime is stockpiling lawyers for the upcoming investigation - so even they know that the impeachment is probably looming

8. It's a nice thought, but I disagree.
It's my understanding that office space for congresscritters is at a premium. Cluttering Pelosi's workspace with 100 dozen roses (or any huge configuration of flowers) is not a sensible idea, and borders on thoughtless. The delivery alone would be highly distracting to all the staff working in that space. As Speaker, Pelosi does have much better offices than her peers, but that's no reason to go filling it up with flowers. Time is of the essence right now. They have no time to waste with distributing bouquets among the staff or redelivering to Walter Reed.

As well, I'd prefer to recognize her for a specific act of congressional bravery, defiance, accomplishment, etc. She's only just today become Speaker, and hasn't yet had a chance to "earn" those roses.

There are alternatives. Perhaps we could send flowers to patients at military hospitals, or care packages for military families, or a group donation to a "non-partisan" but liberal foundation that supports our causes. Or perhaps we could just wait and see. Or we could get out and protest, like Sheehan. The more voices that are raised increases the likelihood that our voices will be heard.

Please don't rush into sending a truckload of flowers to people who need every square inch of workspace they have.

13. Yes, she is. And It is, but this way?

Speaking as a woman, I would be reluctant to be recognized for simply being a woman doing my job. And that is what Pelosi is trying to do, her job.

What she has done so far is ascend to a post that was hers by virtue of the 2006 election results.

She didn't do it: we all did.

Right up there with the time we sent flowers to Boxer and to Helen Thomas, IMO. Many people felt that they were just doing their jobs. But you can't tell me that they didn't appreciate it.... it was wonderful to see the pics with the smiles on their faces.

It's symbolic. Flowers to her for flowers for ALL of us.

19. Uh, no, she had an enormous hand in it
From orchestrating the strategy against privatizing social security to letting Murtha lead on Iraq to micro-managing the takeover of the House in 2006, including being the biggest fundraiser in the House. We wouldn't be anywhere without Nancy Pelosi. And she managed to do it all under the radar so she wouldn't give Republicans a big fat liberal target to shoot at. She is owed so much more praise and commendation than she has been given.

20. Yes, but what's the best way to do that?
I still think that it's counterproductive to their efforts for us to fill her office (or place demands on her staff's time) with 100 dozen roses, or any other expression of gratitude that takes up so much space.

How do you presume to know what I think? Your assumption is gross and I expect more from a poster like you.

I don't understand how my opinion (which I think was pretty clear) motivates you into goading some kind of arguement. If that's not what you're doing, then perhaps you won't be so assumptive or inflammatory in responding.

Don't pretend this has anything to do with anything except you think you're right when the matter is one of disagreement over whether or not to squander a hardworking woman's time with space-wasting buckets of roses.

38. "space-wasting buckets of roses"
I do not know why you feel that way about flowers, but from everything you said, it seems to me that you think flowers demean the hard work women do. Sorry if that's not accurate, but it sure isn't inflammatory to try to figure out what you've got against flowers. Some women do think flowers are not appropriate in the workplace and is just another method of demeaning women, like calling them honey or cupcake. It is a point of view. If it's not yours, okay then.

40. Okay then. I have been misunderstood.
I have nothing against flowers. You noted that I referred to "space-wasting buckets of roses," but you mistakenly place your focus on the roses. I am talking about space-wasting buckets. Dozens on dozens of buckets of roses, bamboo canes, or pixie stix would still be space-wasting buckets.

Speaking as a woman, and as a person who works, I hereby go on the record as saying that I think flowers are lovely. Some floral arrangements are lovely. (A very good friend of mine is a professional florist, can I say that?) I have sent them to my husband, and on occasion he sends them to me. Flowers in the workplace can be cheering and uplifting. Are my feelings on the matter any clearer?

Mass quantities of any object, that when sent in any regard whether benevolent or malevolent, most certainly will impede the work at hand.

Pelosi has work to do. I stand by my position that there are other ways to demonstrate our support.

How about sending two dozen roses (with a LARGE card,) and donating whatever balance we might get to a charity that the Speaker would like to support? Having watched her this morning surrounded by children, maybe we could donate to a charity that benefits kids in some fashion. (Does Head Start take monetary contributions, for instance?)

The great thing about sending flowers to people like Thomas, Sheehan, or even Boxer is that they were being under appreciated.

65. Who would have thought that a potential flame war could erupt at any minute
about sending flowers to the first Woman Speaker of the House?! *slaps forehead*. How about those that want to send flowers can send flowers. Those that are fretting about office space, do not send flowers. Those that expect impeachment as the first order of business in the 110th Congress can wait to send flowers. *slaps forehead*

I personally would like to send flowers, and then Madam Speaker can donate them to Walter Reed. I'm not in DC, but I would be so happy to contribute.

67. I should have known better -- this is GD, after all!
And not one of the 5 or 6 opening day threads had any arguments at all -- not one!

I'm happy to donate to whatever gets organized, but I don't have the time or patience to do the organizing.

68. It makes a huge statement-- All those flowers
I know it would be great to donate to charity, etc...But all these flowers make a strong statement to our new Speaker of the House... I personally think she will be blown away by the sentiment.....
