Good bye and good riddance William Donald Schaefer...
A subdued but good-humored William Donald Schaefer, leaving public service after five decades, bade farewell yesterday at his last official meeting as Maryland state comptroller.

The usually colorful and oft-cantankerous Schaefer, 85, was showered with praise and presented with a cake at a meeting of the state Board of Public Works at the State House in Annapolis.

"I don't go away happy, I go away sad, because I wish I could do it all over again," said Schaefer (D), one of three board members.

-snip-

At yesterday's meeting, Schaefer drew uncomfortable laughter when he said he would now spend his time alone in his apartment, eating TV dinners.

Too bad :nopity: but maybe if you weren't such a racist, sexist asshat it wouldn't have been that way!! Bye bye Donny, hopefully we've seen the last of you!

1. WHAT???
As a life-long Baltimore resident, what the hell are you talking about? He did a ton of great things for Baltimore. What is this hatred you express for this man?

3. I'm sorry I can't abide politicians who put a "D" behind their name...
but are openly racist and sexist and campaign for the other party's candidates. Admittedly, I don't live in Baltimore, maybe if I did I could see beyond his transgressions, but I can't.

4. ??
How was the man openly racist and sexist? Please educate me.

He was instrumental in the rebuilding of Baltimore in the 1970's and 1980's -- the Inner Harbor and the downtown area that is now a tourist attraction, as well as the Orioles moving downtown and the Ravens coming to town. Whereas in the 70's, the city was a dying industrial port city. He helped to put Baltimore back on the map.

I'm simply not aware of anything he said or did that was openly racist or sexist.

5. I vividly remember driving from Florida to New Jersey and somehow getting
lost in the construction work going on at that time (80's)in Baltimore. Did you know Nancy D'Allesandro Pelosi graduated in 1958 from Notre Dame High School?? Anyway, got a tour of Baltimore unexpectedly and really loved it. Don't know much about this man, did a lot of work for the city though.

7. Read the link that I provided...
it gives the two most recent and infamous examples. There are others. He may have done some fine things for Baltimore, but he is not a very fine person imo.

6. I agree
And I live here. He may have done great things in the 1970s to revive Baltimore, but should have been turned out after that. Time passed him by. He really lost my respect in 1992 when he waited until September to endorse Bush. One of the rare recorded instance of a Rat jumping onto a sinking ship. After that, it was a bunch of missteps, one after another. Wikipedia does a pretty good job of summarizing his more recent missteps. (first link). The last straw was his open leering at a young aide during a Board of Public Works meeting (second link).
