Stupid statement on CNN: Re Keith Ellison

Someone saying that he now has to represent all Muslims in Congress. What bullshit, he has to do that no more than I would have to represent all Catholics if I were in the Congress.

8. Even so, I would bet that Mr. Ellison
will represent all humans quite well (except maybe for Republiconvicts), let alone just Muslims, or his constituents ...

9. For good or bad, that has always been the expectation
For all the years that Barney Frank was the only openly gay member of Congress, there was a very strong expectation among the gay community that he represent the interests of gay Americans. Any time a matter came up that touched gay people in particular, there was a strong expectation that he "do the right thing" and "support his community."

There have been times in the past when the House or Senate had only a single woman or a single black; they, too, held the expectations of their communities, and faced great criticism if they failed to be strong, outspoken advocates for issues important to women and blacks.

As the only (openly) Muslim lawmaker in DC, Keith Ellison will carry the same expectations from Muslim Americans. I'm not saying it is fair or right, only that this is how it has always been.

11. Perhaps I am overly optimistic today
but damn it, haven't things gotten better over the years?

I was born in the South in 1954. The changes for the better have been amazing.

We are going to get there.

It will take time, but look at what has happened just in my lifetime!

We are going to make it. We are going to be all right.
