NYT: Bush's top spy Negroponte 'never seemed comfortable in spook's clothing'
A front page article in Friday's New York Times takes a revealing look at what led to John D. Negroponte's decision to move from being President Bush's top spy chief to deputy secretary of state.

"From the start, John D. Negroponte felt miscast as the nation's first director of national intelligence, his colleagues and friends said, a diplomat who never seemed comfortable in spook's clothing," Mark Mazzetti and David E. Sanger write for the Times.

"It was because he was so uncomfortable, officials say, that he agreed to do something generally unheard of in a city obsessed with bureaucratic rank: trade a Cabinet-level job for a post that essentially requires him to handle tasks that Condoleezza Rice would rather not deal with," the article continues.
