1. Other options needed
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 12:35 PM by TechBear_Seattle
My answer is, "Yes, but I haven't been able to do anything about. Yet."

I don't sling mud back when others sling mud at me. I'm generally much more subtle and vicious than that.

2. I've been a target of it, but I wouldn't consider myself a "victim" of it.

Attempts to intimidate over the internet have the reek of the true loser, no matter how clever they are. I've had all sorts of hate mail- I just posted on my site and let other people mock it. (My site isn't live right now- it was a collection of cartoons I've made).

4. I had some high school pipsqueak repeatedly
Threaten to "kick a mudhole" in my chest because I replied all to something my then-high-school-aged niece sent out via email - a list of stupid quotes. All the Dan Quayle quotes had been changed to claim that Al Gore had said them. I corrected that and made a small joke about Bush quotes, and the guy took it a little too personally.

We went back and forth in email for a while. He constantly threatened me and tried to goad me into telling him where I lived (unlisted), as if I'm dumb enough to fall for that. I patronized him and offered to meet him at the McDonalds in the town he lived (since my sister and mom live there, I visit often), and I would buy him a Happy Meal before we went out to the parking lot so he could proceed to kick a mudhole in my chest. He just kept getting angrier and angrier so it was actually quite fun.

Eventually, my niece went up to him one day and showed him a picture of me and told him, "He's 3 times bigger than you. Leave him alone, moron."

5. I was unsuccessfully targeted - reply to all is your friend.
A couple of former classmates/casual acquaintances - all of whom knew my political stance - tried sending me outrageous and infuriating right wing crap. Nearly all the time their emails were forwarding crap which had been refuted on urban legends sites. Instead of simply replying to the OP, I replied to all, starting with a statement to the effect either that I KNEW how happy they would be to learn that the email they forwarded was a pack of venemous lies, and I was sending them documented truth about (whatever subject). A couple of times I got thank yous from complete strangers; other times I got mindlessly hostile replies from complete strangers; but in all cases the OPs didn't mess with me again.

6. I don't think so
I has some interesting e-exchanges with a rabid Europhobe in early 2002, but I laughed at his ignorance more than being offended by it.

7. Intimidation on the Web
I run a very popular Yahoo entertainment group called, "Buffy, Angel and Firefly". We also cover most shows in the SciFi/Fantasy/Horror genre. My leftist politics always comes through regardless of where I post or what Group I am on and Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, Angel and Firefly, is a great and very active leftist.

Anyway, as I said, my political sympathies always come through. One day, out of the blue, some nut-case right-winger, who...oddly...had been lurking on BAF for a couple of years...evidently got his fill. One day he totally spammed the group and my personal email box with all these threatening, outraged...and all caps, of course...email...about how he was "...going to get my lesbian, commie, Saddam ass." I never exactly understood how he thought those three things went together...lesbian, commie and Saddam... ...but he just went into a rage about my politics. I, of course, banned him from BAF and a couple of the...very few...liberal-ish...Republicans on my group, wrote to him and told him to lay the fuck off and to never bother me again. I told him the same. He was not the first nor was he the last. ...and this was on an entertainment group...<g> I wear my politics, like my heart, on my sleeve, evidently.

After the mid-term elections I went and joined Ann Coulter's forum so I could enjoy watching their little heads spinning off. I figured I would just lurk and laugh and scoff to myself but I could not control myself and dared to make just a couple of remarks and inoffensive remarks at that...at least by civilized people's standards. I just simply disagreed with something they said. They attacked me like a dog on meat. I was called every name they could think of...leftard, libtard, Demoncrap...etc. Now I do just lurk and am creating a LJ/website making fun of them by actually using their own posts to point out how stupid they are.

The Right knows no boundaries as far as their mean-spirited intimidations of people go. That guy who called me a lesbian, commie saddam...threatened to bring it to my house.

8. Entertained, not intimidated.
I tend to be just a little left of center on most things and moderate left on other things. So even here on the DU I had people farther left or farther right want to challenge me to a keyboard dual. Sometimes I play along for a few minutes for pure entertainment but mostly I just wander off and let them tell themselves they "bested" me.

9. I'd hardly say I was a victim.
I tend to incite, so I figure I get what I ask for.
