Has anyone retrained for a job...
and still can't find employment,if so what do you think are the reasons. I keep hearing retrain and once you are retrained you they want you to have two, three or five years experience.

1. hubby is learning how to drive a truck after 20 years in TeleCommunications
if I wasn't on the far side of 50 i'd be in school for a Medical field (nursing, labs or whatever)

They are screaming for CDL drivers here, so he's set. Me, I probably will go back to waitressing

15. by the time I got out of school, even for a LVN i'd be 54
I'd just as soon schlep tables

it won't be any harder on me physically and I can do it without spending a ton of $$ to get trained

5. Unless he knows someone who will hire him right out of
truck driving school to drive locally, he'll have to go with an over the road company for awhile to gain experience. When I first started driving 18 wheelers back in 1997 I couldn't find a job locally. I drove over the road coast to coast for 3 months with a national known low paying employer. The first month was with a trainer. Everybody said you needed at least a year of experience to land a high paid local driving job. I did it with three months experience.

14. he's hired on already with a local Gas Field Services co. with just his
permit

they will train him from there (he does have a bit of experience from growing up on a farm)

Lots of gas and oil fields around here and they need lots of drivers to do lots of different stuff. he is gonna be driving a water pumper tank truck so he doesn't even need his HazMat sticker

yup, lots of Haliburton rigs around here (but thankfully he's not with them)

2. hmmm-- I "retrained" from printing/graphic arts to biology/ecology...
...but didn't have any difficulty getting a job as long as I was willing to go wherever the jobs were offered. Of course, the retraining involved ten years of education and a lifelong debt, but on the other hand I like my work much more now-- I'd do it again without hesitating.

3. I just finished a degree in Respiratory Therapy
It was a 2 year degree (I had a degree in Art from 20 years back) There are jobs and they pay a decent wage.....It is also quite interesting and rewarding once you get used to being around very sick people. Can't go wrong with medical anything as far as I can tell.

On edit:
I am a nurse and am having a good time at work. We got some new nose suckers for these little kids with RSV. They work fabulously and give a strange satisfaction of being able to suck all the stringy snot in one shot with very little trauma.

6. retrained into several fields - but it still doesn't open doors
Most companies say they can't find people and ask for H1B visas while those who retrain can't get them to call them for interview. Get the form letters - we picked someone else

Never know if it is too much training or too little.
Even applied to circuit city and best buy and have heard nothing -

most jobs say competitive wages and then you find out that means 6, 7, 8 dollars an hour

seems only those in their 20's or 30's can get hired and then they get big bucks - not sure what the formula is
even with college degree saying recent graduation - nothing

12. That is what I have been finding...
I cannot understand why this country would train or ask for people of other countries to come and take jobs, when more and more people are finding themselves out of work.

21. they eiether send it to India or China or bring them here -
Call any call center and either you are routed to India, philippines, or mexico, or canada and if you get someone in USA their accent is so thick you can not understand and think you are in a foreign country - colleges give great scholarships to people outside usa - computer field was first - then those graduate students teach the classes - I stopped taking computer courses because I could not understand the instructors -

7. he should try something else.. i drove and it was terrable, crappy machenery, bad hours.. didnt
really make any money..and listen up... BONT LEASE A TRUCK>> they only last 3 or 4 years and the company will not let you drive a truck older than 3 years..

dont do swify.. 22,000 drivers and 120+% turnover anually.. and there is a reason why..

really try to do something else.. they say you can get home so many days a month.. and they will run you way out from home.. and you can get bus home if you want.. and then have to take whoever is next to get a partner.. and there is probably a reason he is looking for one..

if you really want ot be away from home all the time, fine.. it is expensive to eat on the road, it is probably the 2nd or 3rd most unhealthy job, stress, bad greasy food in dirty places.. gangrene athletes foot all the time.. covenant is another bad company to work for.. mostly all noobies.. you will do a month with trainer then you have drive with another noobie for a long time.. having your own truck is ..well, you might have to know someone.. or work for several years till you can find a dedicated run near home.. they do exist..

please please go to a truck stop and sit in the cafe and talk to drivers.. they say you will make so much a year.. not in the winter and not if they send you to the NE, you will be lost on rural roads going really slow thru little towns with speed traps..

10. try dental offices
I see quite few ads for dental assistants. With your schooling and persistance you are bound to find someone willing to take you in and train you farther.

16. I did it several times including....
3 and a half years ago when I became an Assignment Editor at a tv station in the news department. This after toiling in radio for years(technical side) and lots and lots of construction.
Proudly, in 3 years, from what I hear(and according to my reviews) have become pretty good at my new career!

19. At age 33, I'm on my 3rd career
Sadly, the days of the lifer are gone.

The last career change I decided to go into business for myself, and I'll never go back to the corporate whore job. I can't stand having a boss.
