...but I think this is a good move.I suggested to Skinner that in the next upgrade he add that each time a new thread is added it should list whom is blocked from replying-for instance, I would never read a thread where some of my DU heroes (Will Pitt, Husb2Sparkly, TominTib and many others) were banned. He agreed this might be good....

There are only a few people on here that I really don't like, but I'd rather know what they are saying. I can then choose to ignore them by not replying, or argue constructively. I am a firm believer in "know thy enemy".

Then, someone decided it would be fun to insult my intelligence because he/she disagreed with me.

I consider use of the ignore function to be rank cowardice in many cases.

That said, if there is someone cyber-stalking you, I'm not gonna give you grief. But in that case, skip ignore and take it straight to the admins.

And there are plenty of both around here!

Although I admit there are times where I'm tempted to put a few people on ignore to keep my blood pressure down, overall it is better to know how your (perceived) adversary operates. Whether you allow yourself to be goaded into a flame war is still within your control.

There was one poster, may she rest in peace, that did that so often we named the place we were all sent... Ignore Land, Upper Ignore Land, Ignore Acres, Ignore Valley, etc. Maybe that's why she was tombstoned?

Really. And this new ignore thing that's going on to me is quite ridiculous. Are people such candy asses on this board that they have to exclude people from their posts? It's so babyish, like sticking your fingers in your ears and going "Blah blah blah, I can't hear you." It's actually embarrassing that some people are such lightweights that they can't bear to read differing opinions or risk being offended. I'm disgusted.

I think I'm going to like this new anti-harasser feature.

I do remember writing once i was putting someone on a permanent ignore, and whether it was that one, or not, i guess i have the right to change my mind.

the whole new feature reminds me of Sensenbrenner, and O'Reilly tactics, and as mentioned by another, in another thread, i imagine the freepers are orgasming right about now over our "new-founded freedom".

i believe my days are numbered here, and this saddens me in some ways.

What is the point? Unless someone is stalking you and cross posting in threads just to piss you off. I have seen that happen so I can understand why the need for an ignore button.

Putting people on the ignore list because you had an 'argument', is stupid IMO. It means you've lost your mind and can't handle reality.

although i am guilty in believing it was closer to a reality in that there were others with like minds that were not being represented or given a voice in the mainstream media. And thus the reason mediums such as this flourished.

i guess tho, if it were more like reality, then i suppose way back on Jan. 06, 2001 as a couple of young guys hoisted a banner displaying 'DemocraticUnderground.com' during an inaugural parade ...

However, it is reality, what goes on in virtual reality still eats up the time and effort it takes to 'surf' the Internet for whatever purpose. Just like now while I'm typing this post.

Emotions rise and fall, the eyes and mind gets its stimulus. Time moves forward.

If you aren't prepared for a difference of opinion, then maybe you'd prefer living in solitude in a bubble. But the real world contains about as many different opinions as there are people.

The only people I'd even consider putting on "ignore" usually get the offending posts deleted and/or banned entirely. But I've debated with some really wacky and/or hostile DUers and so far not a single one has irked me to the point where I feel I shouldn't have to view their opinions any more.

This kitchen can get pretty heated, so people who can't stand strong opinions or differences may want to look for the exit sign.

And I know damn well that if I "ignore" anyone,
I'll just spend time wondering what I'm missing.

;) I did the same thing when I first started posting at DU, and I soon began wondering...where did all the DU er's go? :cry: yes I was a very lonely poster!

now I clear out my ignore list whenever it has more than five posters. Life is lonely enough..especially for those of us Democrats who live in red states! what is a debate without hearing another person's points, without the ability to see the flaws in my arguments, and without the ability to know when I agree or disagree with a fellow voter?

I love debate. I love listening to another person's argument, telling them when I agree. Then leaving that person with no place to run when they are wrong. The good people admit the flaws and ask how I feel about that issue, the bad ones get mad and resort to insults or name calling. Those who can accept criticism are willing to accept the truth, those who view criticism as nothing more than insults are unable to fix the flaws in their argument.

And one or two I might take off later. I don't think I'll use the block feature for any of them yet.

I think all but two of them are tombstoned, I really need to update it and remove "dead" posters.

Since I don't tend to make "me too" posts, and frequently only post to defend adult entertainment, there is going to be a lot of people who have me blocked from replying.

So I'll block them to and just start my own posts to counter their mis-information.

It must not have been over anything that serious. So I took them off today.

Just kidding... Why would I want to ingnore anybody here on DU? Everybody has an opinion, some I agree with and some I don't.

I go back and purge the list when things cool down. Then, I feel silly but at least in the interim, no blood has been spilled. :silly:

I don't put people on ignore, but did that one time because of repeated, personal attacks. It got to me after a while.

I've taken them off several times, but they always earn their way back on.

But, from what I see from the responses he/she gets, I ain't alone.

This is the smartest, most vital community I've found in a decade of being on the 'net, but come on, there are thousands upon thousands of people here, and even if you just go by the law of large numbers they're not all going to be worth listening to.

Some DUers are ignorant, and some of them can't back up their opinions with facts, and some of them harp on one or two issues to a monotonous degree, and some of them wrongly think it's cute to use ee cummings punctuation and/or ALL CAPS, and when I run into those people I just click the red X and go back to the previous page so I can enjoy the other people in the thread. As an old friend of mine once put it, "Killfiles: don't leave the real world without them."

There is nothing I am afraid to talk about with anyone.

There's no point in talking to people who already believe all the same things you do - no-one learns anything. I've never used ignore, and I never will.

If someone stupid disagrees with me, it shows I'm doing something right. If someone intelligent does, it gives me a chance to learn something.

I declared amnesty two or three nights ago and cleared the two dozen or so that were there.

I have a new policy: EVERYONE going on my ignore list gets a taste of the new ignore features.

So far- the people on my list were there before.

I mean how hard is it not to read something?

If I've seen the same person post the same thing for 6 months, I don't need to see it anymore. Some people only show up for specific arguments, like guns or the free marketeers or some such. Good bye. I don't need that shit.

It wasn't pretty, he wouldn't stop, and it got nasty. There was no real reason for it, either.

Other than that, I just alert on someone who seems troll-like.

but I made it to a few last year when I dared to suggest that the defendants in the Duke rape case were innocent and that the accuser was lying. So did many other people, of course. A common phrase in any Duke thread back then was "Welcome to my Ignore List!"
