Anti-Islamism in anti-drug ads?
I don't know how many of you have seen the new anti-drug commercials which features "S.L.O.M."ing as a substitute for drugs. (SLOM stands for "Sticking Leeches on Myself") http://www.abovetheinfluence.com/the-ads/slom.htm

While on the surface it seems to be just another crappy anti-drug series of commercials, I think there may be something more to it. The "bad" activity described is "S.L.O.M."ing which is pronounced in the videos as (slaa'ming); which sounds significantly close to both Islam and Salaam.

It seems to me they could have chosen roughly 900 billion other things in the whole world to use instead, yet they went with the one that sounds like Islam and one of the most commonly uttered Muslim phrases.

Could this be a simple coincidence? Something subconcious? Or an anti-Islam agenda?

Let's also not forget about the anti-drug commercials linking terrorism: http://www.theanti-drug.com/oil_terror/whatisterr.html

1. This is a real stretch on your part. I think they picked those leeches because
they look disgusting. I guess they could have called it "PLOMming" (putting leeches on myself), but "sticking" is a stronger word.

6. Is sticking a stronger word?
Putting sounds just as "strong" me.

2. If you cut off your finger and they sew it back on, you'll look at leeches as yor friend.
I dunno about anti-Islam, but this is certainly antil-leech.

3. Well, leeches were used for
medical purposes back in the day. So maybe an attack on medical marijuana. But the irony is, leeches are making a comeback as a medical tool. :smoke:

4. like NYCgirl said, it's because leeches are slimy and disgusting...
the "Sl..." sound is just great onomatopoeia. (Sort of like how I can't keep a straight face when someone, especially Ang San Su Kyi with her British accent, talks about, "the SLORC" in Myanmar--it sounds like something from Star Trek.)

Besides, the reason they went with an acronym in the first place was so they could have the shock value of the viewer finding out that they're referring to leeches, not out of any subliminal political considerations.

5. I dunno, but my kids and I agree it is only a matter of time before
somone in some middle school will try it to "make fun" of the ads, thus the beginning of a trend. (I'll let y'all know!);-)
