Al Gore's No. 1 Best Seller AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH to be Adapted for Young Adults in Co-publishing Partnership Between Rodale and Penguin Young Readers Group

NEW YORK, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Penguin Young Readers
Group and Rodale announced a co-publishing partnership today for the
purpose of adapting US Vice President Al Gore's New York Times No. 1
best-selling book, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH: The Planetary Emergency of Global Warming and What We Can Do About It (Rodale Books; Paperback; $21.95; May 2006) for young readers. The young adult version, entitled AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH: THE CRISIS OF GLOBAL WARMING (Viking Children's Books/ Rodale Books; Trade paperback; $16.00; hardcover; $23.00; 208 pages; Ages 11 and up; April 2007), adapts Gore's powerful message for a generation that will have to confront the crisis of global warming.

The partnership was crafted by Vice President and Publisher of Rodale,
Liz Perl and President of Penguin Young Readers Group, Doug Whiteman. All
of Mr. Gore's profits from the young adult books will be donated to
fighting global warming.

Al Gore commented, "There is no doubt that young people today are more
aware of environmental problems than my generation ever was. As this new
generation comes of age, it faces the enormous challenge of solving global warming. That's why I felt it was so important to adapt An Inconvenient Truth for them. In order to fix this crisis, everyone needs to be involved. I have faith that young people have both the ability and the enthusiasm to put a stop to global warming."

I am so excited about this I cannot contain myself! This is such a brilliant idea, especially in light of the NSTA trying to stop this truth from reaching our children. I do not as a rule ever ask for any thread I post here to be kicked up, but please if you would do so, please do this so that anyone with children from ages 11 up can see this. And to Rodale, Penquin Press, and especially Al Gore, THANK YOU.

2. Oh well...
I'm kicking this up. Does anyone else believe it is a MORAL IMPERATIVE that our youth get this information now? Or is it only important here if they are voting age or the book can be tied to some speculative clandestine political aspiration of the author?

4. This is great
I'm planning to do a presentation on An Inconvenient Truth for a group of 5th through 8th graders in a month or so. And I really need to work on adapting the presentation for a younger audience.

9. It's hard to do
I'm writing a book on my own to try to address it to nine year olds and older in the form of a story and it isn't easy. On the one hand you don't want to scare them, and you also want to keep it entertaining and educational. A tricky balance at times. Perhaps crossword puzzles, role playing, and other interactive activities will help get the point across while also making them a part of the presentation to make them know they are also a part of the solution would help. Hope you don't mind the advice, and good luck.

5. Brilliant move by publisher and author.
And the price looks reasonable for library purchases.

I can't wait to hear how long it takes for this title to hit the ALA's "banned" books list.
