UNBELIEVABLE!!! Tonight on the News Hour
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 08:51 PM by whereismyparty
Jim Lehrer reported the raid on the Iranian Consulate by saying the Americans raided "an Iranian government building" in Kurdistan. Then he said that the Iranians claimed it was a diplomatic building, but the Americans said they were smuggling in weapons for the insurgency!!

That was it.

"Iranian government building"!?! It was the friggin' Consulate for God's sake!

What has happened to the News Hour??? It used to be such an exemplary source for news and perspective.

It's sad.

1. I keep saying it - I bet they just figure, hey Kurdistan isn't a country
so a diplomatic mission to Kurdistan has no protection at all.

Good story. Try it on Talibani.

2. I was just thinking something similar
They probably consider the consulate as something either built out of Saddam's control when he was in power - therefore not truly Iranian, or built sometime after Saddam's capture but before the elections, also not truly Iranian.

Or they just don't give a shit.

Kurdish troops and American ones after this incident. Apparently it was so severe that our troops had to go out via helicopter.

6. The media is just incredibly lazy - because the public demands nothing
from it (present company excepted!)

7. Um, why would they smuggle in weapons through Kurdistan
where they would have to pass through Kurdish border control at the Sunnistan border, then have to smuggle the weapons through Sunnistan to get them to the Shia militias in Baghdad.

Seems like just throwing them on one of the hundreds of trucks passing freely over the border in the Basra region (from Koppels recent documentary) would be a hell of a lot simpler.

Something does not smell right.

11. UNBELIEVABLE!!! you forgot to finish his whole statement....
"In Iraq today US led forces detained six Iranians in a raid. The raid came in Northern Iraq, it targeted a government building that was flying an Iranian Flag. Iran said the building was a diplomatic mission!"

If you skip to 3:20 on the audio file, thats where the piece begins.

http://media.pbs.org/ramgen/newshour/expansion/2007/01/11/20070111_news28.rm?altplay=20070111_news28.rm

So, you have a link that disputes this, and says it was something other than the facts as those that were reported by him.

14. "smuggling in weapons for the insurgency"
Which Insurgency?

Iran has floated a $Billion Loan to the Iraq Govt. Isn't that Govt. also being funded and propped up by the US Govt.? Why would Iran send weapons to an Insurgency that is fighting the Iraq Govt.? This is getting more confusing every day.
