How many sons and daughters of Fox news staffers are in the military? Just curious.

How many sons and daughters of Congress and the Senate?

How many sons and daughters of the extended Bush family?

How many sons and daughters of any S&P 500 Companies top execs?

How many sons and daughters of any talking head pundit in the cable circuit?

If the world hangs in the balance, you would think that all the believers would be sending off their sons and daughters lickety split. Oh, ok . . . guess it's not all that important.

28. Cousin Billy Bush is only 35. Instead of
a cushy job hosting celeb. tv shows, somebody should stick a gun in his hand and ship him off, too. These Bush lowlifes have no problem with the idea of sending other people's kids off to die while they kick back and enjoy the perks that come with a famous name.

children held responsible for their parent's misdeeds?

5. It's a legitimate question...

...and asking it doesn't 'hold the children responsible'. I believe the point is that it's very easy for SOME to be gung-ho hawkish when they have no personal risk.

9. No, it's not a
legitimate question. The Bush twins, for instance, have no moral obligation to serve in Iraq just because their father is a war criminal. It adds nothing to the conversation, and is, in fact, a personal attack, which obscures the issue instead of shining the bright light of day on the reasons why the war was a bad idea, morally, politically, and pragmatically.

It is, in short, the argument of those that can't defend their position intellectually. And the position agaisnt the war is so damn easy to support and defend, that it bothers me that people will stoop so low.

If the war is justified (it's not), then it is justified regardless of who does, or does not, serve. And if it is not, sending in the Bush twins wouldn't make it so.

11. This is not just a 'conversation'

...other people's children are dying. As the parent of 18 and 16 y/o sons, I firmly believe that those politicians, pundits, neocons, war-profiteers, etc... who so eagerly pushed and supported this blood for oil invasion/occupation... would have been much more circumspect if they faced the possibility of personal loss.

26. All well and good.
Still, in our political system, we do not hold the children responsible for the crimes of the fathers. And every person in the Armed Service is a volunteer who knew what they could get into.

Unless, of course, Charlie Rangel succeeds in getting his draft bill passed. Poor Charlie. I know his heart is in the right place, I know he wants to bring attention to the problem. But he is such an ass. If it passes, which it won't, the Dems will get the blame, come next election. This is not something to look forward to.

And rmember, even if there is a draft, the rich and powerful will still be able to protect their own kids. That's shy so many people want to be rich and powerful.

OK, I think we are on the same side of the war issue. Irrelevant arguments do not help make the case.

27. OK.
Maybe they are single issue voters. He is, after all, their father. They don't have to agree with him on every issue. And people don't get punished, or drafted, for the way they vote, or think. Not in the United States. Not yet.

Anyway, it is not relevant to the justification, or lack thereof, of the war, which is where the discussion should be. Not on the personal character of the Bushes.

That's my opinion. You have your own.

10. They have the harder job of
fighting the War on the Home Front.

The division of the American Plutocracy is very simple to understand. The rich class, into which mobility is low but not closed, have the task of running Industry, the Military and Government. The other lesser classes must send their children into public re-education centers, at which, a healthy fear and respect for authority is drilled into them and the skills needed to operate as cogs in the Machines of War and Business are taught.

These cogs are then used to fight wars and work as Wage-Slaves. Most often the cogs are discarded when injured or destroyed, to find for example the VA has "lost" their personal data or the Government has slashed benefits for VA funding, education or medical care for vets. Occasionally one of the Captains of Industry also takes all the funds in a so-called Golden Parachute, from a corporation with Wage-Slaves.

Of course, legislation and litigation in the last 50 years are so have allowed some workers to force companies to compensate them for injuries suffered while on the job.

13. Because we live in a specialized world
Don't want the draft, this is what you get.

If you do want the draft, then that leaves the choice up to the state, which through the ages has done nothing but expand, which always leads to war.

We can't have everything. We live in a world where most of us don't actually make anything we use. We also live in a world where most of us don't actually fight the wars we support. Nothing comes for free, and this happens to be the price of specialization.

19. And immigrants. Join the Army, and become a citizen.

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2006/12/26/military_considers_recruiting_foreigners/

December 26, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks -- including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer -- according to Pentagon officials.

Foreign citizens serving in the US military is a highly charged issue, which could expose the Pentagon to criticism that it is essentially using mercenaries to defend the country. Other analysts voice concern that a large contingent of noncitizens under arms could jeopardize national security or reflect badly on Americans' willingness to serve in uniform.

23. Wow... If they research and see how extended "service" becomes,
I doubt that anyone would take that track toward becoming a citizen.

Yeah, my legs were blown off and I get no veterans benefits, but I'm not upset because US-born veterans don't either!

And it's not like any terrorists would sign up.

17. And the enlistment age has been raised to 42. That's a handy fact
to have when you are discussing the Iraq invasion with RWers. Nothing kind of stops them like asking them if they support the war so much, why haven't they enlisted?

You've probably seen this too

http://apnews.excite.com/article/20070112/D8MJEH400.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon has abandoned its limit on the time a citizen-soldier can be required to serve on active duty, officials said Thursday, a major change that reflects an Army stretched thin by longer-than-expected combat in Iraq.

Until now, the Pentagon's policy on the Guard or Reserve was that members' cumulative time on active duty for the Iraq or Afghan wars could not exceed 24 months. That cumulative limit is now lifted; the remaining limit is on the length of any single mobilization, which may not exceed 24 consecutive months, Pace said.

Obviously, we need more soldiers, or they wouldn't be resorting to moves like that. So, come on, lurking freepers, and the dead-enders, I mean 30% who support the war (or is it down to 20% by now?), if you are under 42, why haven't you enlisted already?
