Poll question: What will Chimpy McCodpiece's approval ratings be when announced next week?
His latest approval ratings are ...

AP/Ipsos 01/10 32/65
Gallup 01/07 37/59
CBS 01/03 30/63
ARG 12/21 35/61
CNN 12/17 36/62
Gallup 12/14 35/61
NBC/WSJ 12/11 34/61
ABC/WaPo 12/11 36/62

Depending on the first pollster to announce the post-"surge-speech" approval ratings, how many points down or up will they go???

1. Up 2 or more
This is the stupid media we're talking about here. They'll find a creative way to word the question.

2. Haven't you been watching today?
The media has completely turned on Bush. Faux notwithstanding.

I think he'll be in the high 20's, and will creep into the mid 20's within a few weeks.

4. The approval poll is worded the same (by pollster) no matter what.
While different pollsters vary in their formation of that question (i.e. Rasmussen only offers the 'strongly or 'somewhat' as a follow-up and not in the original question), they've been constant in the formation of the question for many years. (That's the reason the trends are more valid, within MoE, than the raw number.)

6. Even though some CongressPukes are offering 'leadership' for the GOPher retreat?
Interesting.

9. I just think Chimpy has bottomed out. The 25-28 percent knuckledraggers
who think his shit doesn't stink are stuck on stupid and would rather eat their mothers than admit they were wrong about the bastard.

5. Would they even announce it if it went into single digits?
 That sound you hear is poll data being swept under the rug ...

7. Probably not ... since it's never happened before.
They'd probably panic and see what another poll came up with first.

8. I've always pegged his hardcore support at 28-33%
They're the people who would rather die than admit they were gullible enough to believe a pack of lies, that they have been confusing an evil man with their god, who really think they're going to see some economic benefit out of unsustainable economic measures, and who are either pig ignorant or stone crazy.

There's just not that much wiggle room on his numbers.

It's going to take his lobbing nukes and some sort of retaliation from the rest of the world to punch through the cement on more than 5% of them. The rest are hopeless.

10. Hitler's hardcore support in pre-WW2 Germany was pegged at 35%
It's apparently all that's necessary. :scared: Along with a lot of complacent couch potatoes.

12. Complacent, apathetic or scared of retribution from violent loudmouths
They had the brownshirts. We have the Freepers.

You make a very good point about how a cowed population is easy for a minority to push around.

"Reading Lolita in Iran" detailed the rise of the fundamentalists after the Shah was deposed. The same thing applied there.

13. I often think there's such a thing as "too comfortable."
Maybe we're more like dogs than cats ... needing to be walked to be kept in shape. Even cats can get fat and complacent, though.

When I think how people in the US often react to trivia (like Britney) in ways that people in "3rd world" countries react to the janjaweed or imminent starvation, I have to wonder if we don't need something more constant to calibrate our outrage. When I regard how the rabid right gets outraged at people for their choice in whom they love, I have to wonder whether these people need a taste of something to really get upset about.

Complacency seems to naturally lead to "getting something to really be upset about." From the days of bread and circuses to the days of wine and roses to the days of iPods and remote controls, the old Societ epithet of "decadent" just keeps echoing in my ears.

Our complacency has gotten us Cheney/Bush. It's gonna get worse before it gets better, I'm afriad.

We're too damned comfortable.
