"Weather Normalization Surcharge" Natural Gas Heat
I couldn't make this up if I tried. Because we have had above average temps this weather, the gas company is adding a surcharge because we are not using enough gas this winter to heat our homes.

1. here's what you do:
send them an annoyance bill. Photoshop it up from a real bill so it looks official. Make sure you bill them for time wasted reading their ridiculous surcharge bill.

Just keep sending them the bill every week. See what happens. Some newb in their accounts payable dept might actually wind up paying you.

2. Good grief.
Small and medium businesses are supposed to take the losses.

Wait, gas is a big org. They can do what they please and bypass pesky widdle things like 'ethics'... :(

8. We are screwed in Ohio. Our PUCO is in bed with the utilities.
This is printed on my current gas bill:

Your current gas charges are much different from the previous month. Whenever there is a significant change, we will provide this comparison information to help you understand what affected your gas use. For energy-saving tips, or to learn more about our Budget Plan, please visit our website or call us.

    Current month's charges........$240.48
    Last month's current charges...$139.78
    Last year's current charges
    for the same period............$460.60

I'm sure they will think of some way to make up their "loss" due to a warmer winter.

6. The GALL of these utility companies!!!
Gee, I wish I could invoice a surcharge to customers who haven't bought any product or services from me in the last few months citing "you are not buying enough from me".

7. In most states, utilities are a monopoly, or near monoply.
Their charges are controlled by a State administrative agency, usually called the Utilities Board or something similar. In most states, the utility imposes the charge, or raises the rate, and then goes to the Board for permission. If permission isn't given, the charge gets refunded. I'd complain to the Board.

11. Yankee Gas did something similar
Last year consumption was down because of the prices, so they announced that they were raising the prices to make up for the decreased demand. What a rip off - My house is colder, and I still pay more. It was anti-conservation.
