Internal Combustion: How Corporations and Governments Addicted the World to Oil and Derailed the Alternatives
Edwin Black

At a recent meeting of the American Jewish Committee's Institute for Analysis of Global Security in Washington, DC, Edwin Black describes how the automotive and petroleum industries have encouraged oil dependence. Mr. Black begins by telling his audience that people have been trying to monopolize resources -- wood, water, electricity, etc. -- since the beginning of human history. He then explains that the first battery-powered car was developed in the 1890s, but its production was undermined by advocates of the internal combustion engine. Edwin Black concludes his talk by weighing in on the feasability of alternative energy sources such as corn & sugar cane ethanol, hydrogen, nuclear power, and solar power.

Edwin Black is the author of six books, including "IBM and the Holocaust" and "Banking on Baghdad." He is an investigative journalist and syndicated columnist who has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize nine times.

Journeys for Freedom is a dynamic and factual account of real people pursuing freedom — and creating America's story. Follow the rocky path forged by Roger Williams as he struggled to convince his fellow pioneers of the wrong in seizing Native American land. Fight alongside daring Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man for the privilege of defending her nation in the Continental army. Take a treacherous journey with Peter Mulual, who fled his war-torn homeland of Sudan for the promise of safety and hope in America. Filled with fascinating facts and striking full-color illustrations by Rodica Prato, Journeys for Freedom allows the reader to literally chart the progress of the brave souls who risked everything for the dream of freedom.

Kids Make History highlights the undeniably important role that children have played in shaping the United States. Twenty true stories of children making history are featured in this exciting and colorful new book, which has been meticulously researched by the authors and beautifully illustrated by Randy Jones. Patty Reed will show you how she survived starvation with the Donner Party. Laura Ingalls will give you a tour of the cabins of her beloved stories (she actually lived in them). Joan Zuber will take you back to that tragic day at Pearl Harbor. Jukay Hsu was there on the fateful morning in September when the towers fell.

William Styple, Editor

In the late 19th and early 20th century, artist James E. Kelly (1855 to 1933) conducted extensive interviews with over forty union generals of the civil war. "Generals in Bronze" is a collection of interview transcripts compiled from the original interview notes.

William Styple has edited and written many books about the civil war including, "The Little Bugler", "Writing and Fighting the Civil War: 500 Union Soldier Letters from the Battlefield", and "Writing and Fighting the Confederate War: The Letters of Peter Alexander Confederate War Correspondent." Without this thread every week, I never would have read "100 Ways America is Screwing Up the World", or the lastest book ("Indian Yell") by the author of "Dancing with Wolves", or dozens of other great books over the past year.
