We need some stars at the January 27th protest.
Tim Robbins, Dixie Chicks, Eddie Vedder, Bonnie Raitt, CSN, Springsteen, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Pink, Green Day, John Fogerty, REM, Ben Affleck, Natalie Portman...these are all people who have spoken out against Bush and/or the war. And I'm just getting started... I'm sure other DUers can think of a lot more. Now, I know the odds of getting even one of these people to show up is probably slim to none, but I think we should try. This thing needs publicity and there is no better way to get that then to have some celebrities there. Sad, but true.

One of the smartest strategies the neocons ever implemented is the one to get us to distance ourselves from our pop culture icons. The whole "liberal Hollywood/culture war/blahblahblah" meme is based on their own fear of how effective the stars are in getting the MSM to pay attention. That's why they attack Michael Moore, Rosie and the Dixie Chicks so vehemently. It's laughable, really, when you consider the fact that, in contrast, they EMBRACE any celebrity that speaks out in favor of Republicans or Republican policy. Hell, they don't just embrace their celebs-they elect them as Senators, Governors and even President.

So anyway, I think it's worth a shot. I bet most of the people I mentioned don't even know about the January protest. I'm thinking we should start an email campaign to get the word out and invite some of these people. Sure, most of the bigger stars I mentioned won't even see the emails but I'm going to do it anyway. I hope you'll join me.

"And friends they may thinks it's a movement.

And that's what it is , the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and
all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come's around on the
guitar."

12. Good idea.
I'm going to email United for Peace and Justice.

I really think this protest is going to be big. I live in Maryland and have been spreading the word to everyone I know. My husband has been, too. I have been amazed at the response. Marylanders get asked to go to a lot of protests so it's usually hard to get much of a response but people have been incredible this time. Even when I just casually mention it, I'm getting a lot of people asking me for more info. My husband has so many people from his workplace that want to go, we're thinking about renting a bus. Seriously.

23. They are publicizing the shit out of this
I think most of the Hollywood folks probably know about this march.

Susan Serandon (sp?) was at the march in NY last April. Willie Nelson and his wife are friends of the peace movement and come to a lot of events.

I think they know.

5. Off to the greatest! K&R
This is a good idea. Do you have a list of email addresses to contact them? Should we just try to look them up. I'll try to see what I can find in a little bit. Contact through their fan clubs or websites? We don't want to be accused of spamming anyone. Does anyone else know the rules on this?

PEACE!

Bonnie Raitt

fanmail@davematthewsband.com

I'm not having a lot of luck with this, so far. A couple of the artists have message boards, which they probably don't read, but it still might be worth a shot to post a message there about the protest.

I'll keep looking. In the meantime, I liked the idea about contacting United for Peace and Justice. Maybe they have some contact info for some of these artists. I bet MoveOn.org could help, too. Most of the artists I mentioned were at the Vote for Change concert in '04 sponsored by MoveOn.

One interesting thing I noticed while checking out all these websites...almost every artist I mentioned has a section on their site dealing with political activism.

6. There are some DUers who work in the entertainment industry.
This is the best way to contact these people. United for Peace and Justice has connections to some, as does Randi Rhodes, Sam Sedar, Al Franken and Stephanie Miller, for example. Try this route.

Good luck! :hi:

Those are great ideas, I think I'll try to contact all the ones you mentioned. I figured it would be hard to find contact info but thought some DUers might have connections or ideas.

REM - rem@wbr.com

Also, I found this site that lists celebrity addresses.
http://www.webterrace.com/celebrity/st.htm
I don't know how legit this is and the stars might feel like we're invading their privacy if these are home addresses. It probably wouldn't hurt to send them some flyers about the protest, though. Most of the stars I mentioned are listed on this site.

is how the media completely IGNORED and did not cover ONE MILLION protesters in Washington last year.

You are right. A celeb or two will help.

29. Want to see something really cool?
Check out this video on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqmnLKwKNic
This is from the Vote For Change Grand Finale in DC. Springsteen joined REM for Man on the Moon. Watch Bruce's face when he sings the "Andy are you goofin on Elvis-hey baby" part.

I was at that concert that night and it was amazing. Youtube has some other clips from it that are great like Pearl Jam doing Bushleaguer and Natalie Maynes singing Sweet Baby James with James Taylor. I have the concert on videotape, too, and watch it over and over. It was probably one of the 5 best nights of my life. Good music, hope for the future and a concert hall filled with progressives. Good times.

30. Free Spirits Unite
Dear America,
"Whenever Pharaoh wanted to prolong the period of slavery in Egypt, he had a favorite, favorite formula for doing it. What was that? he kept the slaves fighting among themselves. But whenever the slaves get together, something happens in Pharaoh's court, and he cannot hold the slaves in slavery. When the slaves get together, that's the beginning of getting out of slavery."--Martin Luther King Jr.
After the President's address, Americans were displeased by President Bush's plan to use arms to maintain peace in Iraq. The whispers spread around the nation, asking, "How can democracy spread without diplomacy?", "Won't violent means give violent freedom?" "If we live by the sword, won't we die by the sword?"
Amidst these criticisms, the President put his faith in democracy and asked the people to show him their plan for Iraq.
Americans gathered and discussed who could best lead us in formulating this new plan. We thought if we could gather the great spirits of America and let them discuss the war, they might give us the best solution. On January 27th, we, the people, want to see these free spirits unite for peace and justice.

Let us find these great Americans and call upon them to help their country find an alternative to violence. This is a call to all those sleeping souls, let us unite. Get on phone, e-mail, ask around, call connections, do whatever you need to do to contact these people and ensure that they will gather for the people and do whatever they can to make the alternatives to violence heard. If we all do our part to spread the word, on January 27th in the Mall, the whole world will know that America stands for peace, justice and true democracy.
