Well, I supoose they had to gin up some sort of conflict once the Cold War was over. God forbid this country ever sees any sort of peace dividend.
We got suckered into this once before by the Cold War. An ever simmering, low level conflict that grossly overstated our opponents military capability. By continuing to spread the myth of Soviet military might, cover was provided for the vast expansion of the military industrial complex.
Now that the Soviet Union collapsed under the stress of trying to keep up in the arms race, we were left without an excuse to continue our own military escalation. And while Clinton only cut the military budget by two percent during his tenure, fear was running high in the corridors of military power. Some threat, any threat, had to be found or created to continue to justify more spending on the military. And like it did for pushing up Bush's poll numbers, stripping our civil rights and many other detrimental programs, 911 provided such cover.
Now we are engaged in a war without end, like all wars on nouns are. Spending levels for the military have shot through the roof, and the profits for the few are escalating at an exponetial rate. And as we have seen with Katrina, these obscene profits come at the expense of the poorest and most devastated amongst us. Our infrastructure is crumbling, our ability to react effectively to natural disasters is non-existent, for all of our money is going to feed the military machine.
If this continues, and it certainly looks like it will, we will suffer the same fate as the USSR, collapse and bankruptcy. A country cannot sustain for long spending half of its budget on its military. We're already teetering on the edge of the abyss, we have got to pull back shortly, or we will plunge over into darkness and death. Sadly, it doesn't appear we have the leadership or will to pull back. Thus, you and I are now left to fend for ourselves. I suggest you start preparing for this looming catastrophe now, before it's too late.
