Watching JONESTOWN: PARADISE LOST right now
This is supposed to re-create the last days of the Peoples Temple cult, along with the "White Night" drills and the massacre of Congressman Leo Ryan by Temple guards.

I clearly remember when this happened, I was still a kid but it's something I never forgot...

3. It's hard to think of Jonestown as paradise for anybody
Oh, it LOOKED good, but it was a regimented cult with suicide drills so they'd all meekly drink the cyanide laced Koolaid when the time came. Jones himself lived in terror that they'd start seeing him for what he was, a megalomaniac and a sociopath.

Whatever channel it's on, I hope it gets resurrected when I get my dish back.

5. And of course, Jim Jones was a second-rate magician and con artist
Y'know, I can summon rain on a clear day without a cloud in the sky, but it's just a trick. A very nice trick, I think, but still just a trick. It's so amazing how many people were actually taken in by this psychopath's shtick.

7. Glad they are showing it -
I talk to younger folk all of the time who don't know the origin of the expression "Don't drink the Koolaid" or "He/she drank the Koolaid".

10. A haunting quote attributed to Jim Jones duing the final days
If by any chance you would make a mistake to try to come in and take any one of us, we will not let you, you will die, you will have to take anybody over all of our dead bodies...Don't let me hear you say hate is your enemy. Love has practically caused me to get you destroyed. If I had hated a little more — just a little more — we would have had a little less trouble. When I look at my friends today, sure, you've got love, principals, but don't say 'hate is my enemy.' What do they say? What's those words? Hate is mine and I've got to fight it day and night. And what is the other, the line? "Love is the only weapon?" Shit! Bullshit! Martin Luther King died with love! Kennedy died talking about something he couldn't even understand, some kind of generalized love, and he never even backed it up and he was shot down! Bullshit! Love isn't the only weapon with which I've got to fight. I've got a hell of a lot of weapons to fight! I got my Cause, I got purposes, I got guns, I got dynamite, I got a hell of a lot to fight! I'll fight! I'll fight! I will fight!

9. Unfortunately I watched it as it happened..
and i was worried sick about my best friend who had joined some dumb cultish charismatic church.. they called their preacher "father" and sold a car to give him the money and were actually talking about the land he was buying to set up a "compound"..

That day I called her and said "TURN ON THE TV"..

They did eventually leave that group, but i was really worried..

Don Harris the reporter killed at the airport along with Ryan was a local reporter on the news here in Los Angeles. I really liked him and felt so bad to see him gunned down liked that.:-(

14. Why Would I Want To Watch That
I feel like we are reliving it right now with Jones played by Bush. I wonder who the guards will be that shoot us as we try to escape the kool-aid drinking.

15. Because, in the end, George Santanaya was correct
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

We have to remember, for the sake of our children and our children's children. Especially once the spectre of Bush's regime fades from Washington DC. Eternal vigilance.

17. A very good idea, indeed
A chilling reminder of where blind obedience to a demagouge will ultimately lead.
