4. It's a measure of their desperation in the White House and
Pentagon that the sent the fool out to try to charm the PBS audience.

Fat chance, George.

11. This is bizarre, Swampy
I've never seen the Bush that's performing with Jim Lehrer tonight.

Talking fast, confidently, dropped the accent, as if he's actually thinking what he's saying.....

5. it was quite scary-read snip and go to link for full interview
PRESIDENT BUSH: Well, you know, I think a lot of people are in this fight. I mean, they sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible images of violence on TV every night. I mean, we've got a fantastic economy here in the United States, but yet, when you think about the psychology of the country, it is somewhat down because of this war.
Now, here in Washington when I say, "What do you mean by that?," they say, "Well, why don't you raise their taxes; that'll cause there to be a sacrifice." I strongly oppose that. If that's the kind of sacrifice people are talking about, I'm not for it because raising taxes will hurt this growing economy. And one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life's moving on, that they're able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table. And you know, I am interested and open-minded to the suggestion, but this is going to be -

12. the important thing is when asked about sacrifice
ie helping the military by sharing this enormous task of rescuing Iraq, he more or less
said that's not what I WANT, it's enough of a sacrifice to watch it on Tv, we should
not give this man another dime to fight this war.

7. The Brooks/Shields discussion following the interview was quite good.
David Brooks really wanted to find some positives in the interview and said it was the best "job" bush has done thus far presenting his case to the country, and YET, Brooks was clearly uneasy in having to be the conservative trying to defend the crap bush spouts.

9. damn I first read that as the Brook Shields discussion
and thought how desperate is PBS? :silly:

David Brooks always reminds me of a nervous thief, fearing at any minute he's going to get busted.

15. here's Brooks critical evaluation, I agree with your assessment
Edited on Tue Jan-16-07 10:01 PM by MissWaverly
I have always found Brooks too eager to rubberstamp Bushco until last week, now he
is offering objective, critical analysis, we could have used that back in 04, during
the prelude to the election. But better late than never, here's his assessment
from tonight Newshour with Jim Lehrer on PBS.

And what he's trying to do is absolve himself from having to make a judgment and give us the reasons for the judgment, because there are all different generals and colonels and everybody else giving different analyses of how many troops it will take.

And he doesn't give us any military reason. And when pressed, he always gives you a personal reason. "Well, I trust this guy, General Casey. I like that guy, General Abizaid." Well, they're good guys, but the president has to have made -- has to have heard the different arguments and have a substantive reason why this number of troops will work and that number of troops won't work.

And he never really answers on that. He just says, "I defer to the generals." Again, that's not good enough anymore. I haven't heard that many other plausible arguments. And I'm willing to give this policy a chance, as other people who know more about the military situation, more than me, are willing to give it a chance.

16. I watch the News Hour on a regular basis and I have noticed
over the last few months that David Brooks is becoming more and more critical of Bush. He used to be quite a supporter and pretty much defended anything Bush said and tried to put a good face on it. Lately, though, he and Mark Shields agree more often than not about the harm that Bush is doing to our country. Bush is rapidly losing his loyal supporters in the media.

I just wish I heard more of his objectivity before all these mistakes have lead the American
people into the swamp. We will get out but it will be hard slogging.

Great video, it reenforces my belief how far we have gone down the road of poor strategy,
I really feel that we have passed the point of no return on that highway.
