Sometimes the truth hurts
My daughter has a very pretty little friend who is 18.
She is a beautiful young lady that has a boyfriend who is black.
Problem is...her parents are pretty racist and know nothing of this relationship.
Apparently, she was texting who she thought was her boyfriend. After about 10 minutes into it, the person sent a text message that said that she hadn't been talking to her boyfriend, but to his mother.
You have to understand that we live in a town that is more black than white. Our school district is one of the only THREE failing districts in Texas. The opportunities for kids to get out are slim if they aren't smart or don't play sports.
This boy does both. The future is his if he just follows his dreams.
His mom got to the point. She said she was VERY proud of her son. More proud than this girl could know.
She told the girl that she liked her. She thought she was a pretty girl. Her son was in love with her and she was welcome into her home anytime.
Of course, this made the girl very happy.
Then the mother asked her if her parents could say the same about her son.
Would he be welcomed into her house the same way she was welcome into theirs?
Of course, the answer is no.
This mother is afraid that her son is going to blow his chance to catch his ride out of this town because he is so much in love with this girl. He isn't considering certain college offers because this girl has no desire to go to that particular school.
The mother asked the girl if she didn't care about him the way he cared about her, then to please move on. It wasn't fair to play with his future because she was into getting some kicks and rebelling silently against her parents.
Her son deserves to be welcomed into her home.
I totally agree. Very sad in our day and time that this would still be an issue with consenting 18 year olds.:(

1. Seeing the kind of town they live in, I can see this mother's concern for her son.

2. Sad, but unfortunately, not surprising.
I think that many of us build this fantasy of what amerika is and who comprises the majority of its citizens. I have to agree with the mother in this case, if the kid is really good enough to get a ride out of the apparently inevitable future he faces, your daughter's friend must step aside for his sake. So sorry to hear this.

3. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be, racist parents notwithstanding
But eighteen is too damn young to settle down. They both need to get their asses into college. Odds are by the end of the sophmore year they won't even remember each other very well.

And if they do, well, it was meant to be...
