Maine's Senator Snowe joins Democrats opposing escalation of Iraq War
WASHINGTON - A second Republican signed onto a Senate resolution yesterday opposing President Bush’s 21,500-troop buildup in Iraq, setting the stage for a clash between the White House and Congress.
Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe said she would support a nonbinding resolution that would put the Senate on record as saying the U.S. commitment in Iraq can be sustained only with support from the American public and Congress.
Snowe’s decision came as the White House summoned Republicans to private meetings and GOP leaders raised concerns about more defections. Earlier, conservative Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel joined Democrats at a news conference on the resolution. “I will do everything I can to stop the president’s policy as he outlined it Wednesday night,” Hagel said. “I think it is dangerously irresponsible.”
Bush’s aides made clear that the resolution will not affect Bush’s decision-making. “The president has obligations as a commander in chief,” said spokesman Tony Snow. “And he will go ahead and execute them.”

2. .
“I will do everything I can to stop the president’s policy as he outlined it Wednesday night,” Hagel said.

I know we are not even close, but it seems that the only way to stop Bush would be Impeachment and I wonder whether Hagel would really be serious about "doing everything he can".

3. The Repubs are this close to being consigned to the dustbin
of history and there are a few of them grabbing onto whatever principles they didn't sell to the highest bidder to keep a grip on some sort of power and live to fight another day. The lemming will march right off of the edge with * and the neocons.
