Incidentally, a local District Attorney said on our local news that the radio station and DJ's are not protected by the waivers they made the contestants sign because you "cannot waive criminal neglect."

I think some of those smart ass sounding radio "personalities" deserve to pay with more than just their jobs.

1. Creeps like these DJs
Have St. Louis radio down to a single tolerable station: 88.1
Before I found community radio I was going to remove the radio from my car to save weight.

2. Unforunately It Had To Come To This...
As one whose been around many radio promotions, I've seen some pretty obnoxious and bad ones in my day. This kinda is the culmination of what morning shows and contests have gotten to...and unfortunately, it's taken a life and ruined a family. And all for "just some fun" and a couple of ratings points.

Hopefully this episode is thoroughly investigated. Listening to that audio is painful when you know what is going to happen, but, sadly, had it not ended so tragically, it would be like dozens of other stupid pranks and "punks" that are used to attract listeners or impress an advertiser.

I'll be interested if the station's Sales or General Manager is investigated here. The contest had to have been either devised or approved by one or both of these people...thus they were aware of what was about to happen. In addition, many of these contests have to have some type of liability insurance and someone would have had to have taken out that policy, thus being responsible for the proper operation of the promotion. If there's not criminal negligence here, there sure is lots of fodder for civil suits as someone could have put the brakes to this disaster at several places.

As far as the air people...be assured their future stations will say "BP" and "Self-Serv" on them. I heard everyone involved, including the Program Director have been fired and as long as there's any scent of litigation, these people will be hard-pressed to get any type of radio gig in the foreseeable future. Also, with the corporate consolidation, when you screw up at one station, you've screwed up with 4 or 5 in the same town and hundreds or thousands around the country.

It will be interesting how the FCC acts on this. Will they view it as an isolated incident or use it as a chance to investigate similar morning programs and promotions across the country? If not the FCC, then surely some opportunistic lawyers.

3. Water Intoxication:
Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water.<1>

4. "Can't you get water poisoning and, like, die?"
Then they're talking about the boy that died from the hazing stunt "that poor kid" and then they say, "Maybe we should've researched this before."

"If it gets dangerous for someone your body will automatically throw it up," one DJ says.... uh WRONG.

"Those people who are drinking all that water can get sick and possibly die of water intoxication."

7. Attention DJs: Just play the damned music
Morning radio is all but unlistenable because of DJs that think that their hijinks and witty banter is why people turn on the radio.

And they wonder why iPods are flying off the shelf....

8. Since I got my iPod, my radio has been totally unused except
for the local public classical station.

Who needs radio when you can take your entire CD collection with you?

17. The same DJs reported a similar incident
where a boy died as a result of a water intoxication hazing incident at Chico State, not too long ago. They knew. They should be held accountable. I hope the family sues the sh&^t out of them and they do some jail time. As of now, they've all been fired. Not good enough.
