WASHINGTON - Columnist Art Buchwald, whose wry political and social satire made him a pillar of the nation's capital for more than four decades and earned him a Pulitzer Prize, has died, his son said Thursday.

Buchwald, 81, had refused dialysis treatments for his failing kidneys last year and was expected to die within weeks of moving to a hospice on Feb. 7. But he lived to return home and even write a book about his experiences.

"The last year he had the opportunity for a victory lap and I think he was really grateful for it," said son Joel Buchwald, who was with his father when he died quietly in his Washington home late Wednesday. "He had an opportunity to write his book about his experience and he went out the way he wanted to go, on his own terms."

Growing up in the DC area, Buchwald was one of the local stars, a great wit and someone that lent us all some class. He was a skilled writer whose prose set a good example for others.

12. In the words of Socrates..
"Be of good hope in the face of death. Believe in this one truth for certain, that no evil can befall a good man either in life or death, and that his fate is not a matter of indifference to the Gods." - Socrates

Buchwald Announces Own Death In First 'NYT' Online Obit Video

By Joe Strupp

Published: January 18, 2007 11:55 AM ET

NEW YORK As Web sites worldwide reported the death of columnist Art Buchwald today, The New York Times had one approach that beat them all -- Buchwald himself announcing his own death on video.

"Hi, I'm Art Buchwald and I just died," the late columnist says on the video posted this morning on nytimes.com, just minutes after his death was made public. The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer then goes on to discuss his life with reporter Tim Weiner, in an unusual embargoed interview conducted last July.

The interview is the first in a series of obituary chats the paper's Web site is planning to run, titled "The Last Word." Buchwald's interview, conducted at his Martha's Vineyard home, includes memories of his political writings, his views of the world, and comments on the illness that raised interest during the last year after he declined to continue dialysis treatment.
