A good tip for future hearings: go to this link on the c-span site...
http://judiciary.senate.gov/hearing.cfm?id=2473

Apparently, there are going to be so many hearings that, to me, this is the only way C-Span could offer them all to the public in a simultaneous fashion. Great to know this is available.

Btw, Cardin did an exceptional job for a freshman senator.

It's late evening and I can't stop thinking about what I heard coming from his mouth this morning. It was scary. Why do we have to put up with that guy. Someone said Ashcroft was worse, but I say Gonzales is. By quantity and quality of outright evil and theft - Gonzales wins with me.

to all those in the United States. Specter says that if it can only be taken away under invasion or rebellion, that means we have it. Gonzales says he disagrees with that. Specter told him he was going against common sense.

Now Specter is telling Gonzales he is lying about Bush not using signing statements more than other presidents, and brought out the numbers. Ha, ha!!

124. Gonzo's comments on that make it absolutely certain he's corrupt - unqualified to serve ...
... in ANY position of trust, particularly as a judge, AG, or even attorney!

He said that the Constitution does not confer a human right of habeas corpus. In making this corrupt claim, he's clearly implying that the role of the Constitution is to create or specify what human rights exist. IT'S NOT! In no way, shape, or form can the Constitution ever be seen as conferring human rights or civil liberties. Why? Because it's very existence is premised upon the pre-existing human rights to even write it!! Without the superior and pre-existing rights and liberties of human beings to establish their own government, no government can be regarded as morally legitimate.

The sole role of the Constitution is to establish a federal government and define its LIMITS! The federal government cannot legitimately overstep the boundaries established in the Constitution, and that includes the specific prohibition on abrogating the right of habeas corpus except VERY temporarily in the event of rebellion or insurrection - NEITHER of which exist!

When Gonzo attempted to abolish the claim to habeas corpus as not being established in the Constitution, he FOREVER proved himself corrupt and an enemy of our liberties and freedoms. NOTHING could more clearly indicate his corruption than that, imho.

I really never dreamed before about 7 years ago that this country would fall so deeply into the pits of ignorance and criminality that this administration demonstrates daily.

I can imagine Jonathan Turley blowing a gasket over Gonzo's remarks. Anyone who'd make such remarks should NEVER be allowed to practice law, let alone graduate from law school. That Gonzo was on the Texas Supreme Court is testimony to the abject ignorance and deeply-embedded corruption in that state.

152. Sounds right to me. I was thinking 'creating loopholes in the Constitution'.
But that was before I read Tahiti Nut's commentary (#124); in a nutshell, just because each & every human right isn't specifically mentioned in the Constitution, it doesn't give this administration the authority to do as it pleases.

58. Now talking about the Canadian man kidnapped and
sent to Syria to be tortured.

Asking how come we never apologized to the man
and why is he still on terrorists watch list.
If he was found innocent, why is he still on watch list.

Gonzo says he has very strong views on this but he can't say
what they are right now. Can't do it today.
stutter, stutter, stutter... just can't do it.

Leahy is livid, red face & raised voice in this segment.

I didn't see the full hearing, but the Leahy segment made Gonzo the most uncomfortable. It was quite obvious that he couldn't deal with Leahy's line of questioning. His comfort zone, the Republican stronghold, isn't there for him anymore.

62. Leahy now asking him about Canadian citizen
detained here and deported to Syria. Sent thousands of miles away to Syria, held for 10 months, Canadian commission found he had no connections to terrorism, and was tortured in Syria. Canadians have apologized for their part in the debacle, people resigned, we have not apologized. Justice Dept had approved his trip to Syria, still in on our Watch List.

Why is he on the Govt Watch list when found innocent by Canadians? Gonzo is not at liberty to discuss this - Why? Leahy asks, not a matter of executive privilege. WHY??? Leahy asks. Why was he sent to syria?

127. That get-back-to-you tactic is getting old. I loved when Leahy almost talked over him & said "when?"

129. Thanks you guys
I had to be away this morning, but reading these threads, I feel as though I was there.

They usually re-run these at night on Cspan1 or 2 if nothing else is happening. I want to see it.

132. Go to...
www.c-span.org and at the bottom of the page in the middle is a link to Capitol Hearings...you can follow that link to the hearing schedules, and follow those links to the committee page where you can watch a live webcast. All Senate hearings are webcast.
