Terrorists in Basra, Iraq, have turned Google Earth into a tool for targeting attacks, according to The Daily Telegraph, a U.K. newspaper.

Citing unnamed British Army intelligence sources, the Telegraph said that documents recovered from the homes of insurgents included print-outs of Google Earth images with notations detailing the longitude and latitude of a British military camp.

The article quotes the unidentified intelligence officer as saying, "We believe they use Google Earth to identify the most vulnerable areas such as tents," and notes that one solider has been killed and several wounded in mortar attacks at the camp in question.

Nevermind the fact that Google Earth doesn't relay real-time information, and that much of the information is a few years old. It just sounds really alarming if you say that 'ZOMG terrorists are using Google Earth!'.

I Googlearthed Basrah

the fucking tent camp is SO big that you must be blinded by a sandstorm not to see it. The tents are not even camouflaged. Roads are leading to it.

You cannot "flatten" a print of the picture (even with coordinates) and get something really accurate. All sat pictures are distorted and have to be computerized to give precise locations.

Any idjit that can fire a mortar and have a pair of graduated binoculars will hit the camp. It's a question of distance and elevation. Pointing at the camp is recommended too...

The main problem the insurgents may have, since it's located in flat terrain, is to come close enough without being discovered. Probably they do some hit and run.

Temporary camps are meaningless to look at because the pictures probably lack actuality.
