Numerous retirement homes here have been quarantined in recent months, San Quentin Prison was locked down for a time, until it passed through, and many folks at my workplace, incuding me, have had it in the last 3 months....

This is one of those diseased that can be killed easily in warm soapy water...consistent handwashing is the key to preventing this one...

The Global Consciousness Project (GCP) is an international effort involving researchers from several institutions and countries, designed to explore whether the construct of interconnected consciousness can be scientifically validated through objective measurement. The project builds on excellent experiments conducted over the past 35 years at a number of laboratories, demonstrating that human consciousness interacts with random event generators (REGs), apparently "causing" them to produce non-random patterns. A description of the technical implementation is given under procedures.

The experimental results clearly show that a broader examination of this phenomenon is warranted. In recent work, prior to the Global Consciousness Project, an array of REG devices in Europe and the US showed non-random activity during widely shared experiences of deeply engaging events. For example, the funeral ceremonies for Princess Diana, and the international Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, created shared emotions and a coherence of consciousness that appeared to be correlated with structure in the otherwise random data. In the fully developed project, a world-spanning array of labile REG detectors is connected to computers running software to collect data and send it to a central server via the Internet. This network is designed to document and display any subtle, but direct effects of our collective consciousness reacting to global events. The research hypothesis predicts the appearance of coherence and structure in the globally distributed data collected during major events that engage the world population.


Displays of the data take various forms, including some that show the real-time activity as nearly as possible. Available now are regularly updated tables of statistical information as well as simple and easily understood graphical summaries of several kinds. For example, a graph may show the cumulative deviation of data sequences from their expected values as a composite across all the GCP sites around the world for the past hour or the past day or, say, for the engaging moment of a semi-final "shootout" in World Cup Soccer. One of the display modes is a movie, with music based on the data, represented within a global "map" showing regional concentrations of large and small deviations using dynamic color coding. Depending on contributions of skilled programming, more complex analyses of relationships among the sites will be developed, using, among others, techniques developed for studying brain activity.

Although information will be presented with the scientific rigor that is required for accuracy and clarity, the site is intended also to have a strong artistic and aesthetic presence, We expect to use music and dynamic images both for background and for display of information, and we will provide links to a variety of articles and scholarly resources. We believe important aspects of the project may be represented in stories, poetry and philosophy, including selected readings from Henri Bergson, Teilhard de Chardin, Carl Jung, and others who have thought deeply about consciousness. For example, one of the guiding models for this project is Teilhard's idea of a Noosphere, or layer of intelligence enveloping the earth, and his description of mankind's evolution toward a destiny to fulfill that role. While this metaphor is more spiritual than scientific, it provides a very interesting interpretive background (one of several that we may consider) for our specific scientific questions. A few examples of aesthetic expressions of the project's philosophy and mission are given in our poetic history. Even the scientific data sometimes create immediately meaningful pictures, as in the beautifully symmetrical traces that appear to note the death of Barry Fenn, our friend and REG host in New Zealand.

I have problems with the what gets classified as a "disaster". Frankly, an executive jet overshooting a runway in Moscow Airport with no one killed doesn't really seem to qualify in the larger scheme of things.

More details would be helpful.

Parents at Cuesta Park in Mountain View keep an eye not only on their kids, but on the squirrels. "There was a squirrel, I guess it smelled food somewhere on the playground, so it was ransacking the strollers," says Susan Moriarity, who comes to the park everyday with her 21-month-old son Jack. "I didn't realize until we got back to the car that he had chewed a hold through my stroller." They've even attacked humans. Since May of last year, squirrels have bitten or scratched 18 people, including two attacks in the past month. City officials are still planning to trap and kill the aggressive squirrels. They initially planned to use tube traps that would squish the squirrels to death, but the plan itself was squashed after hundreds of people expressed outrage. City workers are now switching tactics. "The animal is captured alive and then is humanely euthanized," says David Muela, the city's community services director. It's not enough to satisfy critics-- 730 people have signed an online petition asking the city of Mountain View to not kill the squirrels. Animal lovers from around the world have signed on with messages like "Why are they aggressive? Maybe they are tired of us. Can you blame them?" "I don't like the idea of killing them. They're just going after food," Moriarity said. City officials have put up signs warning about aggressive squirrels. Rangers now patrol the children's play area, where food is no longer allowed. When a ranger saw a four-year-old boy holding a cookie near the slide, she told his father to "dispose of it, please, the squirrels can smell it." Some parents say if the attacks continue, the squirrels need to go. "If the problem gets worse, and it's between killing some squirrels or our sons and daughters out here getting hurt, they might not have a choice," said Charlie McKellai, who was sitting on a swing while holding his four-month-old daughter Kristen. The squirrels are not only hungry, however, they're smart. How many have been trapped so far? Zero.

Saskatoon's Royal University Hospital, the city's biggest, was closed to visitors Friday after an outbreak of Norwalk virus. More than 40 patients and staff have fallen ill with the norovirus infection. Managers are trying to contain the outbreak. Health region vice-president Sandra Blevins said she started trying to curtail visits at the hospital at around 2 p.m. The virus is easily spread on surfaces and through the air. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. The illness is rarely fatal, but it can be a serious health concern for seniors and babies. The only exceptions to the no-visitor rule are caregivers of a sick child or a relative of someone who is dying. During the closure, staff will be watching for any new cases. "The idea here this weekend was to really try to limit the contacts and try to clean up, wash down the place very aggressively, and see if we can hold that number there," Blevins said. Norwalk usually runs its course in 24 to 48 hours. If there are no new cases, the hospital should reopen to visitors by Tuesday morning, officials said.
