Colbert, O'Reilly face off on both shows
1/19/2007 7:15 AM
By: Associated Press

NEW YORK - Parody met its inspiration Thursday when Stephen Colbert and Bill O'Reilly traded guest appearances on each other's shows in an exchange that Colbert called "a meeting of the guts."

Colbert has molded his tough-talking, America-defending persona as host of the satirical "Colbert Report" largely on the Fox News pundit. On his Comedy Central program, Colbert has often spoken reverently of O'Reilly — or as he affectionately calls him, "Papa Bear."

"The Colbert Report" and "The O'Reilly Factor," the top-rated program in cable news, were taped one after another early Thursday evening, with "The Factor" airing at 8 p.m. EST and "The Report" at 11:30 p.m. EST.

Once inside Colbert's studio — decorated for the occasion with a large "Mission Accomplished" banner and a portrait of O'Reilly placed fireside — O'Reilly seemed to be regretting the decision.

"This was a huge mistake, me coming on here," he muttered.

1. If you want to see both segments ...
goto http://www.crooksandliars.com . They have 'em on their site; there's a couple of posts between each segment.

4. Just watched the O'Reilly clip, man that was terrible. Poor Papa Bear doesn't know how to take
advantage of one of the few guests that might have actually boosted his ratings.

5. O'Reilly Went From Clueless To Ultra Clueless
Ever seen an impersonator meet the person they're impersonating? It's one of the more awkward things one can see. Colbert out O'Reilly'd O'Reilly on both segments by just being him...and O'Reilly still couldn't figure out what was going on. BillO didn't know if he should play around with it, get mad at it or what is real and what wasn't...Colbert had him off-balance all night. It was even moreso when Colbert had him on his own turf, with the audience at his back...and O'Reilly was in total sensory overload at that point.

The fun for me was to know that O'Reilly HAD to do this...either to show he was a good sport or the network needed the ratings boost or for a glut of other reasons...but deep down you could see O'Reilly was extremely uncomfortable and didn't like Colbert. Of course he couldn't do it...or he'd look like a spoiled sport...so he has his buddy Bernie Goldberg come on and do the hatchet job afterwards. As Scarborough pointed out..."BillO...you had Colbert right across from you for 8 minutes and you choked".

These appearances won't go down with the greatest television moments of all time. Now when does Faux's "answer" to the Daily Show begin? Maybe they can do their own twisted version of the news...ala the Colbert Report and do REAL news for once.
