Texas County hopes to bribe children to turn in their parents.
This is not your Parents America...

Anonymous tipsters helped local law enforcement officers arrest 85 people and recover drugs and stolen property worth $162,000 from January 2006 through the end of November.

"People just do not want to get involved with crime, so if you give them an opportunity to remain anonymous and give them a few dollars on the side, that's very popular," said Tieber, who is also the accreditation manager for the Round Rock police.

snip>
Many tips lead to seizures of narcotics, Tieber said, and callers often report the whereabouts of someone for whom an arrest warrant has been issued.

snip>
Crime Stoppers officials hope to extend the program to schools in 2007, starting with Leander High School, Tieber said. Students would run a campus tip line and dole out reward money.

1. Remember when we used to make fun of the USSR for this?
I remember hearing in school how much better we were that the USSR, because there the kids would turn in their parents for a pair of blue jeans.

I guess since there is no USSR anymore, we have to step up to fill the void.

3. a great tool for revenge...
Feeling wronged? A satisying revenge is just a phone call away. Put something on your enemy's property, and then drop a dime.

Angry at your parents? Frame them, and then snitch 'em out.

Becoming Big Brother's little stool pigeon is easy, fun, and profitable!

:puke:

The totalitarian impulse sure seems awfully strong here in The Land Of The Free (tm).

6. Well, given that Wiis are selling for $250, and the average "reward" is $375,
I would indeed say you have a story here.

There are so many things wrong with this situation. It is sad that we've managed to convince people to snitch on their neighbors. What I'm waiting for is what happens to the snitches. After all, in other countries that tried this trick, the snitch usually wound up dead sooner or later:shrug:

And that they're bringing this to schools is absolutely criminal. Teaching students the lesson that being a professional stool pigeon is a good thing, how disgusting.

And the potential for abuse of this system is huge. Let's see, your a crack dealer trying to take over the trade in your town. Now all you have to do is drop a dime on your competition, and presto, you're the only dealer in town.

Sorry, but this is not the sort of society our founding fathers envisioned, and it is a sad statement that we're sinking to this level.

7. In Orwell's 1984
The children were the most zealous stoolpigeons. Adults feared them.
