& the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn’t there?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzFsG6J-DaU

‘Our story begins, as stories often do, with a young up-and-coming politician. He’s a deeply religious man, a member of the conservative party. He is of single-minded convictions and has little respect for the political process. … He arranges for a special War in Iraq project at Larkhill in the interest of “national security”. At first, it is believed to be a search for biological weapons for which cost is no object. But the real purpose behind the project is power, total hegemonic domination…’

‘…after the election, lo and behold, a miracle. Some believed that it was an act of God himself, or that a pharmaceutical company owned by one of the party members made them all insanely rich. But the real genius of their plan was the fear. Fear became the ultimate tool of this government…’

‘There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the annunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn’t there?’

‘Cruelty and injustice, intolerance, and depression. And where once you had the freedom to object, think, and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who’s to blame?

‘Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you’re looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn’t be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you…’

I remember how the meaning of words began to change. How unfamiliar words like “collateral” and “rendition” became frightening, while things like the patriot act Norsefire and the Articles of Allegiance became powerful. I remember how “different” became dangerous. I still don’t understand it, why they hate us so much.’

best of all, the total truth: ‘People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.’

1. One point: Bush himself is not "a deeply religious man". He's a narcissist.

8. Exactly....
Religion was a marketing device--used to garner Fundie votes.

Bush is about as spiritual as a ping-pong ball.

Anyone who is willing to exploit someone else's religion--and lie
about their own heart--in order to gain power--is evil.

Do the Fundies realize this? Do they understand that they helped
to elect a very dangerous sociopath who belittles their beliefs
behind their backs?

10. Actually, I disagree. It's his "true believer" status that makes him much
more dangerous. His religious fervor is genuine and he believes he's gods messenger.

Many politicians use and manipulate religion to influence, control, and exploit. Bush's PEOPLE may be using his faith for political gain, but I think Bush's is real.

5. True!
‘People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.’

We need, as Americans, to DRIVE HOME the fact that this phony "surge" of troops into Iraq will result in needless bloodshed. It is NOT a risk that has a snowball's chance in hell of working. Think about how many sons and daughters will be needlessly sent to their death JUST SO our Dear Leader can save some of his pride before the inevitable, i.e., pull back troops to the periphery, i.e., UAE, et. al.

This surge is both UNSOUND and IMMORAL. We need to impress upon our Legislators that "they work for us" and needless bloodshed can be averted if only they can grow a pair, i.e., stand up to King George. :grr:

No MORE Blood for Oil!

6. GOP governments are always afraid of the people!
They're terrified all our civil rights will allow us to challenge them, and they're terribly afraid that we might someday come together and overthrow their backers, the obscenely wealthy who inherit vast fortunes generation after generation plus the latest crop of robber barons who are amassing vast wealth of their own by robbing their workers.

That's why they get into office via lies, cheating, and what they call "dirty tricks" and we sensibly call interstate racketeering. That's why they wage consistent attacks against the Bill of Rights, against any and all regulations on capital, business, and labor practices. It's why they illegally use agencies to spy on and restrict the activities of ordinary citizens. It's why they underfund health and education, to keep people weak and ignorant.

That's one of the problems with that bunch, their deep fear of people and of democracy, itself.

14. Extremely creepy and relevant post.
That really is us. As I said in an earlier post, we need a hero in this country. A teacher. A leader.
