Meet the newest member of the Skinner family... It's a baby boy!
Perhaps you've noticed that I haven't been around for the past week. Here is the reason:



His name is Lucas. He was born on January 12 (less than an hour before DU passed 100,000 user registrations).

At birth he was 8 pounds, 6 ounces; 20.5 inches; with lots and lots of dark brown hair. Hobbies include: Sleeping, eating, crying, and pooping.

Mother and baby are both doing great.

I haven't been on DU at all for more than a week, and I haven't checked my email or private messages. I'll be on a sort of semi-parental leave for a while, during which time I'll be checking in and talking to the other admins, but I'm not going to be available full time. I'm going to try to get through my backlog of messages over the next few days. If you have a problem that needs admin attention, you'd probably be better off talking to EarlG or Elad instead of me.

Thank you for all of the good wishes you have sent our way these past few months.

our late, great Moocat adopted our oldest son from the day he came home from the hospital. she would look at him with the most loving eyes and purr loud enough to rattle the windows. she also slept by his feet whenever I put him down on the rug. it was really sweet how much she loved him.

I love the name and the intelligence in his eyes - it just radiates (uhm, you and the baby!)

8 lbs,6 oz - that is huge for a first baby! Ouch for mom but I'm so glad he's healthy!

Lucas !!! and congrats to Skinner and the misses.

His entry just on the threshold of DU's (your other baby's) milestone is a wonderfully hopeful omen for sure.

Post a birth time in the astro forum if you want the astro ladies to add their blessings. There is already a thread started in there.

The Moon went from Libra into Scorpio at 2:08 am EST that day. Babies often are really Lunar in the first several months. A really nice aspect: Venus in Aquarius Sextile Jupiter in Sagittarius was operational that day (7:44 am EST) which is really really fortuitous and good natured.

Too cute.

230. My God What A Beautiful Baby! There's No Greater Reward Than Fatherhood. Here's Some Info You Need:
Firstly, I encourage you with as much heart as I can, to feel free to PM me with any questions/concerns or otherwise that will arise in the coming weeks. I spent countless hours researching and educating myself on a plethora of newborn topics and there are many common things that are bound to pop up that as new parents you may not have heard, and I'd be more than willing to provide own recently learned fatherly advice when necessary. Trust me, there will be several times you will need it LOL

But I also want to say a wholehearted congrats to you and your wife. The coming months will be some of the most beautiful you will ever experience and they will fly by, so take lots and lots and lots of pictures! I recommend a canon Powershot A620 or the like, but to each their own. :)

Some quick tips off the top of my head:

1. If Lucas is being formula fed, expect at times for him to all of a sudden vomit what seems to be a lot of formula. It is less than you think, and unless it is a bright yellow/green is probably something to not get too concerned about. It also might go somewhat far (projectile vomit) but unless it happens really frequently is probably nothing to be concerned about either.

2. Don't fear calling the pediatrician about concerns no matter how much you feel like you are puttin them out. That means no matter what hour of night it is. They expect it, they know the fears of new parents, and they became pediatricians fully knowing they would have to endure the frantic phone calls. Don't hesistate. It will give you and your wife many more reassuring hours of sleep afterwards.

3. If you don't know this already, newborns don't exactly come with solid day/night clocks. For the first couple of weeks, Lucas may very well spend the entire night awake and crying. DO NOT turn the lights on and DO NOT speak loudly or as if it is daytime. Speak quitely, if at all, and soothe him however you can. In no time at all his clock will be set and you will all of a sudden doze off just to wake up to the excitement of "Holy shit, it's 5 am! We slept straight through to 5 am!"

4. Help your wife. In any and all ways she needs it, offer it. She will be eternally grateful.

5. Get one of those 5 inch tall/4 inch wide/4 inch deep timex sound generating alarm clocks (you'll find them in sears). Set the sound to wind and leave it on overnight as your child sleeps. It did miracles for us.

6. Buy only upper quality. The money saved in the long run will be more than the extra money spent to begin with. This is namely for things such as strollers, carseats (Get the britax roundabout later on, after he's big enough to outgrow the carry along)and room monitors.

7. In the coming months it is almost definite that Lucas will catch a cold and get a fever. This fever will make his body emanate heat like you've never felt. Don't let it freak you out that much. Call the doctor, of course, but ease your mind. This is simply what infants with a high fever feel like. And if the fever gets high enough and he has a febrile seizure, just know they are harmless as well no matter how terrifying they are to witness. Probably won't have one, but wanted to pass that along anyway.

8. Always put him to sleep on his back and don't have any loose blankets or otherwise in the crib.

9. Find sleep at any opportunity. Do not waste this opportunity. Tell your wife the same thing. Lucas will not hold it against you if your house becomes messier than usual because you are using the cleaning time to sleep. I can't stress this enough: When he naps, YOU NAP!

On edit -- I just read the tips from Operation Mind Crime's post and it occurred to me that I have a tip of my own:

Jan. 12 is MY birthday - so that's a lucky little boy - AND, I'm also pregnant (due June 14, but with my history of making BIG, BIG, BIG babies, little B probably will be born in late May as the doctor's don't want my small frame carrying around another 10-pounder).

Just so you know, your son and I share a birthday with and odd and eclectic mix of people: Rush Limbaugh (yick), Howard Stern, Kirstie Alley, Oliver Platt ( :bounce: ), Ray Davis and Rob Zombie.

From the pooled experience of me and my friends, his robust size at birth may presage being able to sleep through the night a bit earlier, barring digestive problems. Your life will begin again when you can sleep through the night, too. Until then, your priorities change in ways unimaginable to those who never had their own newborns.

I haven't seen this new edition, but I've given plenty of copies of the 1st and 2nd editions as gifts - have given 'em to pretty much every new parent in the family and close friends. I'm a pediatrician. I'm not currently practicing, but if I was, I'd seriously consider giving a copy of this book to every family in my practice. I know some pediatricians that have done just that. It's THAT useful. My own copy has gotten referred to quite frequently around here! The book is very practical - tells when to call the doc immediately, when you can wait 'til office hours, what to do to treat at home. Good practical step-by step instructions. Also covers behavioral and developmental issues, how to prevent accidents, all kinds of stuff. Even a section on preventing the spoiled child. Dr. Schmitt is pretty much the pediatric guru of parental advice, and very well-known and respected nationwide. His protocols for telephone triage are used in many pediatric offices, as well as a large book of handouts for parents called "Instructions for Pediatric Patients". He had two articles in the journal Contemporary Pediatrics about toilet training in Mar and April 2004 www.contemporarypediatrics.com that IMHO contained some of the best advice/info ever written on this subject.

You've just raised the stakes in the world, one more person to make it a better place FOR, eh? I know, we've got the two year old and when I look in those eyes and think about what world he'll grow up in I'm just inspired to kick more right wing ass and get this world CLEAN for them :)

Hope the doggie is taking it well. I got scared when I saw Lucas on the floor with Romeo, we have a small conure Bird and he went straight for the EYES of our baby son (no harm done, Conrad is fine).

Animals get so territorial, let's hope he just wants more walks and considers Lucas HIS baby :)

Boy is your life going to change, a bum once told me years ago when my first son was born, "Yeah, you USED to pick up a Six Pack of beer and a pack of cigarettes on the way home, NOW it's a gallon of Milk and a pack of Diapers!" The guy was stinky but man was he ever right. I just figured, "Gee a little person around, no biggie."

But along with all the sleepless nights comes something that money just can't buy, YOUR little angel, created by both bodies, 1 and 1 makes 3, and the sweetest smile in all the universe, just for YOU.

My first granddaughter was born on January 10th. Evangeline Victoria (Evie) weighed 8 lbs. 3 oz and 20.5 inches long. Amazingly enough, they have the same hobbies! Perhaps someday they will meet.

my advice: revel in this time. it may not feel like it when you're in the moment but those moments will go by quickly. just remember he'll only be a baby once, a toddler once, a preschooler once. spend as much time with him as you can. try to catch it all--try not to miss a thing. before you know it he'll be eighteen (and voting!) and you'll wonder where all the time went.

it's a love that transcends time and space
the little person you hold and cradle
is so familiar yet such a mystery
you can hardly wait to get to know him better
although it feels as if you've known each other always
and you've always been together
and when you look into his eyes you see magic.
you finally understand the truest meaning of love.

(at least that was how it was for me when my daughter was born almost nineteen years ago.)
