Bush quotes most notable of 2006 expert says
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 06:09 AM by maddezmom
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - President Bush scored high Thursday on a list he may not be keen to top.

Three of Bush's quotes, led by his "I'm the Decider" remark in April, head 2006's most notable quotations compiled by Fred R. Shapiro, editor of the Yale Book of Quotations.

Bush's comment that "I'm the decider, and I decide what is best. And what's best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the secretary of defense" is followed by his State of the Union address quote that "America is addicted to oil" and by his comment on Hurricane Katrina to high school students in New Orleans: "I take full responsibility for the federal government's response."

The "decider" quote was also named "Bushism" of the year by the Global Language Monitor, which issues a list of best George Bush quotes each year. The monitor's Paul JJ Payack said No. 2 on that list was "I use The Google."

:D

~snip~

President George W. Bush's quote "I'm the decider" referred to his rejection of the request that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld step down. Coming in second is "I use the Google," a reference to Google, the popular search engine.

"The Top Bushisms for 2006" was compiled by language observers from all over the world, with help from Global Language Monitor's PQI (Predictive-quantities Indicator).

Other "Bushisms" that made the list include: "It was not always certain that the U.S. and America would have a close relationship"; "The only way we can win is to leave before the job is done"; and "I want to be a war president; no president wants to be a war president."

20. Same here
I do not buy "Bushism" books or calendars. They are *not* funny.

On the other hand, Target's line of Bu$h greeting cards *is*. (Darn. Can't find them on Target.com, but they have lots of them in my local store.)

4. He hasn't slowed down in 2007: "Americans are sacrificing their peace of mind"
—in his recent interview with Jim Lehrer, who asked him why, if this is "the ideological struggle of our time," he hasn't called on Americans to do more.

The year is young, but I think that will be a strong contender.

16. More complete quote ::
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 10:32 AM by Idealist Hippie
GWB on "Sacrifice," a transcript from the Lehrer interview, 17 January 2007, quoted in Salon 18 January 2007:

"Well, you know, I think a lot of people are in this fight. I mean, they sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible images of violence on TV every night. I mean, we've got a fantastic economy here in the United States, but yet, when you think about the psychology of the country, it is somewhat down because of this war.

"Now, here in Washington when I say, 'What do you mean by that?' they say, 'Well, why don't you raise their taxes? That'll cause there to be a sacrifice.' I strongly oppose that. If that's the kind of sacrifice people are talking about, I'm not for it because raising taxes will hurt this growing economy. And one thing we want during this war on terror is for people to feel like their life's moving on, that they're able to make a living and send their kids to college and put more money on the table." ~ George W. Bush to Jim Lehrer, 17 January 2007.

I saved this because it contains so many quotable bits -- I assume the American father is putting food on his family at the same time he's putting more money on the table.....but I'm not sure.

Edit: Also I love the bit about "the psychology of the country" being "somewhat down because of this war." I wonder who told him that? Deadeye Dick, while trying to convince * we need a different, bigger war that people will be more optimistic about?
