Hard to believe if you ask me. Makes Google mail even bigger I say.

1. So far, this only applies to companies who will PAY to spam you
AOL and Yahoo will still accept e-mail from senders who have not paid, but the paid messages will be given special treatment. On AOL, for example, they will go straight to users' main mailboxes and will not have to pass the gauntlet of spam filters that could divert them to a special bulk e-mail box or strip them of images and Web links.

4. It's extortion -- - plain and simple
This won't stop spammers. Instead it is the kind of thing that will penalize legitimate senders. If they don't pay extra, they get put into the same category as spam.

Meanwhile, big spammers will bite the bullet and pay to get through the filters.

5. Don't kid yourself.
This is just the beginning.

It has little to do with spammers. Many large companies with real opt-in lists have seen their deliver rates take nose-dives. They will gladley pay.

Pay to play.

The level playing field that the internet used to be is going to be a thing of the past.

We'll see a lot more of this.

6. I was ready to tell you "snopes is your friend" - but this is very scary
yes I will stick with gmail - this is an outrage. did you see this part:

Paying senders will be assured that their messages will be delivered to AOL users' main inboxes and marked as "AOL Certified E-Mail." Unpaid messages will be subject to AOL's spam-filtering process, which diverts suspicious messages to a special spam folder.

Most unpaid messages also will not be displayed with their original images and links.

So they're going to fuck with our mail if it's not paid for.

8. The day this happens is the day I disconnect from the internet.
I have no interest in involving myself in yet another hosed-up monopoly that is constantly gaming me and others for money and attention. Bye bye.

9. Are you suggesting that Yahoo and AOL have a monopoly on email?

10. no, but once that model is accepted (payment for every little
"service" on the internet), it will be the model for all providers of all kinds. It will become just another way to siphon money from my pocket (and spy on me), and it's not worth it.

11. I've already decided to start banning aol.com and yahoo.com...
Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 11:00 PM by stevietheman
email addresses from being attached to profiles in a discussion board I run. I'm also giving current aol/yahoo users until May 31 to change to another email address, or their board accounts will be deleted.

As a board administrator, I really do not want to deal with this crap of not knowing whether any mass emails, such as forum/topic notifications, are getting through to members and whether I would have to pay for that to happen at some point. It just isn't worth one second of my life for me to worry about--so they're banned.

Hear that, AOL and Yahoo? Your users are gittin' banned! yee haw! :)
