Iraq Looms Close for Private Recruited in Wartime
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 02:09 PM by madeline_con
(snip)

"I don't know all the facts as much as I should," said Private Jordan, of the First Armored Division, 501st Forward Support Battalion, as she sat in her childhood home here. "What I know is that we're protecting our country still. We're concentrating on keeping insurgents away from the United States."

(snip)

The local recruiter made her parents, Byron and Mary, feel comfortable, too, they said. They hoped the conflict in Iraq would fade away by the time their only child finished training, Mr. Jordan said back then, on the same afternoon that his freckle-faced daughter marched across the Lyndon High gymnasium in flip-flops to collect her diploma. "We don't think she is going to be in a battle zone," he said that day.

I HATE When that happens! :banghead: (and it was only six months old!)

Fortunately, I had a spare lying around. :)

12. This one is just crappy, and I need to get a new 'un
It has worked for some time now, it's one of those infrared beauties, but the click switch seems to be iffy nowadays...no doubt all the years of hard use have done the old thing in. I just gotta get off my duff and go get a new one, and haven't gotten round to it, what with the holidays, cold weather, and a load of competing priorities...!

1. Of COURSE she is NOT going to be in a "battle zone!!!!"
She is gonna be in a TRAINING ZONE, silly!!!!! The mission is SHIFTING, ya see, from combat to TRAINING the Iraqis to do it themselves!!

Someone, anyone...alert the insurgents!!! No more combat!! If you have to shoot, shoot the Iraqis, not the fresh-faced kids from the USA!!!! If we just get out the word to them, our children will be magically SAFE!!

And pigs will fly....

If Private Jordan was once ambivalent about Iraq, she now seems certain she wants to go. She said she knows that her job, as one of only a few female mechanics in her unit, could send her out to pick up disabled vehicles - potential targets for attack. Still, she said, she is more excited than nervous. And she is already anticipating the higher paychecks she will make in a war zone; she said she hopes to save $15,000 so she can buy a car when she gets home.

"Honestly," she said, "a lot of my friends like Iraq. It's not as bad as people say."

(snip)

"The threat changes day by day, so I'm going to live day by day," she said. "You can just hope God is on your side and move through the tour and all that other great stuff."

"A lot of my friends like Iraq. It's not as bad as people say." :wtf:

Between the "higher paychecks" and "all the other great stuff" she seems to have missed the news reports of her comrades coming home without limbs, faces, or minds. Oh, I'm sorry; I forgot the news doesn't report too much of that. She'd actually have to dig for "all the facts" she says she doesn't know "as much as she should" to be as aware as she should have been before signing up.

I fear for her, and her parents, and all the other youngsters out there similarly deluded and willing to go fight for the BFEE. I hope she comes back in one piece and able to drive that car she wants to buy, not have to get rides in a handicapped van.

10. She might find she needs the 15 grand to help pay for medical bills
instead of a car. I understand it's not like you can always depend on the VA to cover your medical bills like in the good old days.

During the current Iraq War the U.S. use of radioactive DU weapons increased from 375 tons used in 1991 to 2200 tons. Geiger counter readings at sites in downtown Baghdad record radiation levels 1,000 and 2,000 times higher than background radiation. The Pentagon has bombed, occupied, tortured and contaminated Iraq. Millions of Iraqis are affected. Over one million U.S. soldiers have rotated into Iraq. Today, half of the 697,000 U.S. Gulf War troops from the 1991 war have reported serious medical problems and a significant increase in birth defects among their newborn children.

The effects on the Iraqi population are far greater. Many other countries and U.S. communities near DU weapons plants, testing facilities, bases and arsenals have also been exposed to this radioactive material which has a half-life of 4.4 billions years.

6. That is the most ignorant thing I've ever heard.
An "insurgent" ceases to be an "insurgent" when he/she stops fighting against those forces which seek to suppress them, in this case the U.S. military in Iraq.

8. "We don't think she is going to be in a battle zone," he said that day.
"We didn't think she is going to be in a battle zone," he said later that year.
