Does anybody know if it is simply coincidence or a mis-perception
on my part, but I don't remember hearing this kind of story
http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/02/mine.explosion/index.html (coal miners trapped in WV)
since the 70's, when we enacted all kinds of safety requirements. Is this a result of deregulation that was in the "clean air" law that shrubCo pushed through a couple of years ago? When I was a kid it seemed we had this story about every week and they became less frequent as safety standards were increased.

7. Note at the bottom of the article other recent events:
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 06:50 PM by Garbo 2004
"In February 2003, three contract workers were killed by a methane explosion while drilling an air shaft at a Consol Energy Mine near Cameron, West Virginia, according to the Associated Press. Three mining deaths occurred in the state in 2005, the lowest total there since 2000, the AP reported.

In July 2002, nine miners were rescued after being trapped for 77 hours in a mine near Somerset, Pennsylvania."

The 2002 event with the trapped miners was widely covered in the media. There was a successful rescue operation, carried live on cable TV news of course.

9. Maybe this site, NIOSH, will help answer your question. This page has
graphs, other info also available on specific topics. http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/statistics/disasters.htm
