KENNEDY ON REPORTS CHENEY AUTHORIZED LIBBY TO LEAK CLASSIFIED INFORMATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Laura Capps/Melissa Wagoner (202) 224-2633

These charges, if true, represent a new low in the already sordid case of partisan interests being placed above national security. The Vice President's vindictiveness in defending the misguided war in Iraq is obvious. If he used classified information to defend it, he should be prepared to take full responsibility. President Bush has clearly said he would 'clean house' of everyone who had anything to do with the Plame leak.

The American people are also entitled to know whether the President knew that classified information was being used for this purpose, and whether he authorized it himself.

In addition, they are entitled to know that the case will not be scuttled by the administration when the decisions are made on declassifying documents necessary for the trial.

58. Thanks for making me smile. I know how hard shredding is if you are doing
it yourself at one of those home-style shredders. My pile of stuff that needs to be shredded is six months old. Maybe we should have a law that says politicians that order shredding have to do it themselves using one of those little shredders. That would slow things down at least. :)

BREAKING: Libby's Flipped. He's Dumping On Cheney. by Phoenix Woman
Thu Feb 09, 2006 at 11:34:59 AM PDT
Rorschach of No Capital tipped us off (from an Eschaton comments thread):

Cheney authorized leaks.

Libby is rolling on them (no specific word on Plame, per se):

Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby,
testified to a federal grand jury that he had been "authorized" by Cheney and
other White House "superiors" in the summer of 2003 to disclose classified
information to journalists to defend the Bush administration's use of prewar
intelligence in making the case to go to war with Iraq, according to attorneys
familiar with the matter, and to court records...."

64. Sorry to not respond earlier but I have been moving my computer
to it's own room. yes. I extended for seven months so I would be eligible for a 6 month cut in my service. then tricky dick started bringing the troops home and if you had less than a year left in the Navy you were cut free. I wound up spending a total of 37 months and one day in the navy, not one day on or near a ship. I spent 18 months in warner springs california at survival training school, S.E.R.E. survival, evade, resist, escape training camp, as an aid. from there went to Vietnam. I had to go through the survival school to be stationed there and all the time I couldn't figure out why I was having to be taking this training. At the completion of training and as the rest of the students, navy seals, udt, pilots and anyone who was going to be a commander of a ship or base were boarding the bus to return to North Island Naval base to be shipped to their new duty stations, they told me I would be staying there with them. It was great duty except it was a long way out in the boonies. Everyone except myself and one other fellow sailer were Vietnam Vets. When my tour there was up I volunteered for vietnam and the rest is history. I felt it was my duty. Needless to say I came home a very changed man with a whole new appreciation and love for life.

I was drafted into the Army in 1969, which was a 2 year active duty oblication as you may recall. I got lucky and was sent to Korea instead of Vietnam. Both assignments were 13 month hardship tours, and we got an early out if we came back stateside with less than 5 months to go. I served 19 months and 5 days, but who's counting?

28. John McCain, Hypocrite

John McCain, Hypocrite
by Doug Ireland

John McCain, the media's darling, has found a clever way around his own campaign finance reform law to take big corporate bucks in furtherance of his political ambitions while carrying water for the corporate mammoth providing the dough. But the national press is ignoring the story.

The Associated Press first ran the story of John McCain's odorous but lucrative Senatorial service to the communications giant Cablevision on the afternoon of March 7. But, while some local papers in McCain's home state (like the East Valley Tribune) have run the story, nothing has as yet made it into the print editions of the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, or any of the half-dozen other big city dailies I checked (although, if one searches the hundreds of AP stories available on the Post's website on its Politics page by clicking on "Latest Wire Reports," one can find it there--but how many readers would bother to do that?) One notable exception: the Kansas City Star.

Here's what the AP's investigation found:

McCain repeatedly intervened on behalf of a policy Cablevision favored -- one which "congressional and private studies conclude could make cable more expensive" -- while his chief political adviser, Rick Davis (who's masterminding McCain's probable '08 presidential rerun) solicited $200,000 in contributions from Cablevision to an institute that promotes McCain and pays Davis a $110,000 annual salary.

The Reform Institute was set up to promote McCain and his issues--especially campaign finance reform, embodied in the famous McCain-Feingold law. This Institute is "a tax-exempt group that touts McCain's views and has showcased him at events since his unsuccessful 2000 presidential campaign," and it "often uses the senator's name in press releases and fund-raising letters and includes him at press conferences," the AP says. And, of course, it provides a cushy sinecure with no heavy lifting for McCain's main man, Davis, as he prepares the pontificating Senator's next presidential run. Cablevision's contributions account for a whopping 15% of the Institute's budget.

42. You share my prediction.
That's how I think it will go as well. Cheney will be forced out first. Congress will force Bush to appoint McCain as VP. Then Bush is impeached. McCain is sworn in and he appoints Lieberman as his VP. I also predict that McCain will kick Rumsfeld out and appoint a new Defense Secretary (Wes Clark perhaps?).

36. New email from Kennedy about this
Dear xxxxxxx,

Reports are coming out of Washington today that Scooter Libby testified in court that Vice President Cheney and other "superiors" authorized him to release classified information to make the case for war and defend the administration from criticism of its actions.

Senator Kennedy summed it up earlier this afternoon: "These charges, if true, represent a new low in the already sordid case of partisan interests being placed above national security. The Vice President's vindictiveness in defending the misguided war in Iraq is obvious. If he used classified information to defend it, he should be prepared to take full responsibility."

A National Journal reporter named Murray Waas wrote the story. We've put together a post on his article at the campaign's journal:

http://www.tedkennedy.com/waas

These reports are particularly troubling in light of recent revelations about the President's domestic wire-tapping program. If it turns out that the Vice President authorized the peddling of highly-classified national defense information to serve a political purpose, what does this mean for the intelligence the Bush Administration has gathered about U.S. citizens through their secret and warrantless eavesdropping? And what does this say about their commitment to national security?

Please forward this around to anyone you think may be interested. Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Marty Walsh
Campaign Manager

57. Oh Jeez...
You know, as I read this thread just now I was thinking how odd it was that Libby would give Cheyney up in this way. I hope this isn't part of a grand scheme to achieve another Republican presidency. Although it might be that the Bush admin, if Cheyney was forced to leave, would be rather effectively discredited for '08 considerations.

Excellent point you raised at any rate, caligirl.

55. Thank you Senator Kennedy.
This helps expose Bushco as the duplicitous hypocites that they are. They whine about media exposure hurting their illegal wiretapping program but they aren't above endangering national security to cover their political asses.

56. I think they're going up the list of fall guys--now as high as Cheney.
He's got to go. But Rumsfeld is the mastermind. I call him "the Lurker." Here's what I think they're up to: SOMEONE replaces Cheney now (Rice? McCain? Maybe some fresher face...) to salvage Bush (or rather the Bush aura and Bush policy). That person runs against Hillary in '08, and loses (by pre-arrangement with Diebold and ES&S*). Hillary's in for four years--gets them a military Draft, preps for full scale invasion/occupation of the Middle East, preserves the newly asserted, illegal executive powers (doesn't use them, or doesn't use them much, but doesn't disavow them either), and has to deal with civil unrest (anti-Draft protests, veterans' protests, food riots...). The war profiteering corporate news monopolies start blaming the Democrats for Bush's financial and foreign policy disasters (Day #1 of her term, mark my words). Then--with everything falling apart--they install the real Hitler in '12 (I'm more and more thinking it's Rumsfeld--he's got Hitler on the brain--just called Hugo Chavez Hitler the other day).

*(Diebold and ES&S are the most dangerous corporations in our country, bar none. They are connected through Howard Ahmanson to the far, far rightwing Chalcedon Foundation--'Chalcedon' an ancient reference to 451 AD, when church and state were finally welded together, with the emperor enforcing one faction of 'Christianity' on all, by the sword, prep to pogroms against all other 'Christian' sects, Pagans and Jews. What followed was ONE THOUSAND YEARS of darkness: ignorance, loss of all learning and literacy, including scientific and medical information, sickness and plague rampant, witchburnings, book burnings, inquisitions, serfdom/slavery for most, an "Iron Curtain" over the human mind. These are the people who are now "counting" all of our votes with 'trade secret,' proprietary programming code in electronic voting systems, with virtually no audit/recount controls. THEY will choose who "our" candidates are the primaries, and who gets "elected.")

This is THEIR plan (my guess at it)--that is, the plan of the fascist cabal that's running Bush & Co. Rob the country blind, and send it into penury (as in Germany 1930s), stir up trouble on the left (with a Draft, for instance), and take over in the ensuing chaos. Doesn't mean it's going to happen that way. I think Hillary's already made a deal with them, but may be overly confident about her ability to handle the consequences. In any case, I think our major hope for derailing their long term intentions is to convince Hillary to support real election reform, which would help us implement election reform quickly. Election reform--transparent elections, with vote counting back in the public venue (as they now have in South America) is essential to recovering our country, or what's left of it. Our vote = our sovereignty as a people. And if we can't get presidential backing for real election reform (or if I'm wrong about the cabal's intention to install a War Democrat for four years), we just have to keep slogging away at the state/local level, to get as much transparency in our elections as possible.

61. K&R - (do DLC defenders consider Ted Kennedy "Left Fringe"?)
:applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause::applause:

Ted Kennedy has repeatedly insisted that the Democratic Party be the Opposition party and stop playing "Republican Lite" - the DLC defenders accuse dlc critics as being "left fringe" - but they never ever explain or define what that means, except with the "ideological purity" mantra with absolutely nothing to back this meme up - so then I pose the question to these defenders: would Ted Kennedy be an living example of what is meant by "Left Fringe"? never a response to that question.

We have a few highly principled, true blue Democrats in the Senate. We need to throw all of our support and backing to these Dems, like Kennedy and Feingold and others. And we need to join our voices with theirs, backing them up in Washington and in our local communities...

and we need to do this now.

68. Kennedy has got a piece of Cheney's ass and
I don't think he will be letting go. Kennedy is out for justice and has had it with these crooks. They knew this administration was a bunch crooks when Kerry said in 2004 thinking the mics were off... I hope Kennedy takes a big ass bite out of this administration...
