Mexican Threat to Prosecute U.S. Hotel Over Cuba Embargo Displays Dilemma Businessmen Face
MEXICO CITY Feb 9, 2006 (AP)— Mexico's vow to prosecute an American-owned hotel for adhering to the U.S. embargo of Cuba puts American businesses in a dilemma: Whose laws do they obey those of their homeland or those of their host? No matter what they do, they could face legal action.
On Wednesday, Interior Secretary Carlos Abascal said the Hotel Maria Isabel Sheraton in Mexico City "had without doubt violated Mexican law" by expelling a group of Cuban officials who were meeting with U.S. energy executives.
While pledging to "apply the appropriate punishments," Abascal said "this does not imply that the United States violated Mexican sovereignty," even though the hotel reportedly acted at the request of the U.S. government.
