The Secret Cause of Flame Wars
"Don't work too hard," wrote a colleague in an e-mail today. Was she sincere or sarcastic? I think I know (sarcastic), but I'm probably wrong.

According to recent research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, I've only a 50-50 chance of ascertaining the tone of any e-mail message. The study also shows that people think they've correctly interpreted the tone of e-mails they receive 90 percent of the time.

1. It's a well-known fact on e-mail lists...
It's easy to snap off a quick reply to something, but many of us know quite well that you need to check and double-check how it may look to the person you're replying to.

i readily admit if i made a mistake. no skin off my teeth. why would i be expected to know. i cannot know. so... i ask. easy enough solution

i did have a poster saying i was being defensive and beyond going through the screen and kissing his little toes to let him know, truly i was not.... i could not convince. he told me the evidence was right there. but but but i wasnt feeling defensive, and if i wasnt feeling it, couldnt be in my post. uh huh.

5. You can't put too much water in a nuclear reactor!
That was the premise to an old SNL sketch. The supervisor leaves the crew of the N plant with those instructions, "You can't put too much water in a nuclear reactor." Of course, when the reactor starts to go down, the operators begin fighting over the instructions their supervisor left..."NO! He said "you can't put too much water in the reactor! If you put in too much, god knows what will happen!" The other guys says, "No, no, he meant "don't worry about it." The reactor can take as much water as you can pump into it!"

Hilarity ensues.

7. AHA!
I recently posted something about buying a beer for someone I disagreed with and one response linked my post with media how people would most like to have a beer with Bush. Beer is sacred to me. I would never waste it on a fascist fuckhead like Bush.

You can trash and demean my name, but I'll be damned if you sully the good name of beer. Anyone who hates beer in the name of politics is worthy of merciless flamage.
