It peppered down on him from the SIDE. Gravity apparently works sideways on that ranch. It's awfully hard for gravity to drop shot on someone's face, neck, and chest sideways, but, by golly, Darth made it happen!

Tiny bird shot pellets, upon exit from the barrel of the gun, decellerate rapidly due to their poor aerodynamic shape (a sphere is inherently "draggy" and slow - like a blimp). Here's a graph showing how quickly energy dissipates from shotgun pellets. As you can see, #7.5 birdshot will shed nearly all its balistic energy by the time it reaches 100yds downrange. At this point (and beyond) the shot is harmless - peppering is typically encountered when the shooter takes aim with a "sky" backstop (safe when hunting with birdshot) and the tiny pellets quite harmlessly "rain" back down to earth 2-300 yds downrange.

had blasted Dick... A shotgun will damn near cut someone in half at close range. I know a guy that killed a very large 8 point whitetail buck with a 2 3/4", #6 shot shell in a 16 ga shotgun, at about 35 or 40 yards. The shot penetrated the deer's chest and busted both of it's lungs. The deer ran about 50 yards and fell over dead. I couldn't believe the kid shot the deer with a shotgun, but I saw it happen.

BTW, 50 to 80 pellets indicate close range, the pattern still kinda tight. Dick...almost killed his friend out right.

they did a hilarious studeo re-enactment, to try to show that Dick didn't do anything wrong. Within 30 seconds, it was obvious they had made a serious mistake. What Dick did was simply not okay, as far as gun/hunter safety goes. (The attempted cover-up is perhaps worse.) But I've read that the victim was 30 feet away, and 30 yards away, and these are significantly different -- a greater difference, I should note, than between 30 inches and 30 feet.

If the man had been 30 yards away, the shot pattern would have been at least two feet in diameter and probably more like 3 feet. A 28ga. will hold a tight pattern, but not that tight at that distance(30 yards)... Most bird hunters shoot a modified choke barrel too, which allows the shot to spread faster and at a shorter range than a full choke barrel will. I think Cheney was shooting an over and under, which may have had a full and a mod. barrel both.

You're talking about a shot pattern about the size of a coffee can and that tells me it was probably no more than 15 yards at the max. I'd say the man is damned lucky he's not dead, or blind. The plastic shot cup would have hurt the man also, at close range.

A lot of people try and kill themselves with shotguns and some end up botching the job and blowing away part of their heads and surviving the blast. I know a man who did just that and he looks like a monster even after 10 years of plastic surgery. The guy blew away half of his face from his chin up to his eye and it took out one eye. He still has several pellets embedded in his skull and brain, that they can't remove. He has seizures caused by pellets in his brain. The plastic surgeons told him that they see people blown up like him quite often, when people use a shotgun to try and kill themselves. The man was dog drunk, when he tried to commit suicide. His wife and four year old daughter were upstairs asleep when he did it.

I've been peppered by bb shot more than once and I've never had to make a trip to the hospital because of it. Further, it's never made me bleed.

While I'll agree that our skin becomes more brittle as we age, there is no way this man would need emergency medical assistance if he was merely "peppered". Also, how does one get peppered at 30 feet away? You'd need to be 100+ feet down from the shot.
