The WH is just trying to sort things out to work the PR smoothly...IMHO.

If he is not dead now, they knew or know now that he was going to die.

1. The interesting thing is there has been not a word from the man's family..
You would think by now they would have made a statement. I hope he has survived but with his advanced age trauma to the body is not kind.

15. Yes, there has.
His daughter has been quoted. She said something about his saying or not knowing if he were on his way to the hospital or the morgue.

I didn't take that as a particularly pro-Cheney remark.

... but has probably been on life-support systems since he arrived at the hospital. This gives the WH spinmeisters a few days to come up with a storyline that exonerates Cheney, and (they're hoping) a few days for the initial shock of the story to wear off in the public's mind.

Edited to Add: "Cheney Shoots Man Dead" has a lot MORE impact than "Cheney's Companion Succumbs to Injuries". They really NEED THE TIME, IMHO ...

25. If Cheney was using #6 shot - big enough to bring down a dove
(similar size to a quail) - there are approx. 253 pellets in a 1 1/8 oz. load (12 guage shotgun). At 30 yards, with a pretty tight pattern, 253 pellets can do a lot of damage. They also are flying at 1200 fps from the barrel. Even if Whittington were hit with half of them, he'd be in pretty bad shape.

(The bigger the number for shotshells, the more pellets are in the shot. They also get smaller as the number increases.)

Just some food for thought.

38. They're saying it was a 28 guage, not 12 guage.
Fewer shot, lighter load, less power.

How would that put a heavily bundled man into ICU from 30 yards out? It was cold out there, he had a fair amount of protection.

42. If he was using a 28 guage, you're right on all accounts - lighter
loads, fewer pellets.

But still, any one of the pellets that him in the face/neck could have reached his heart via a blood vessel. There are plenty of accounts out there where shotgunning injuries result in pellet migration.

I'll bet Cheney's FIRST call was to Rove to figure out how to spin it. It took a while for Karl to come up with a plan and make his calls to Armstrong and get control of the situation. Now, as you can see, the mighty spin machine has everyone in lockstep. "We're going to joke about this and that will let the air out of it." Snotty has an orange tie, even Jebbie is wearing orange. 41. I agree--plus I don't think the doctors would out and out lie
They could just say they can't comment on the patient's condition without his (or his next of kin's) permission; that's the legal truth so the press would have to leave them alone if they decided to go that route. That'd be their choice rather than to lie, I'm sure.

I'm sorry about whatever situation has been taking you to the ICU--I hope that the person you've been visiting recovers soon.

I sure as hell don't. If they guy made it into his seventies I would hate that his life would end in such a careless tragedy.

If he recovers, this story will go away like all of the rest of the stories.

This goes back to accepting responsibility for one's actions. They intentionally delay the reporting of the incident, they twist and spin the truth..

They have never taken responsibility for anything they have done.

When are these guys going to be held responsible for their actions?

worst always comes. So I think we'd be fools not to try to 'read the entrails' of these so-called news reports. Cheney has been described as Bush's puppetmaster--as the real president--and I tend to agree. So we are talking about a man who has his finger on the nuclear trigger, who could annihilate the entire population of the earth in the next few minutes--and has done his best to annihilate tens of thousands of Iraqis, and is planning more death in Iran. I would like to know, a) if he was drunk, b) if it was an accident or not (and if not, who was gunning for whom), c) why the Secret Service let a member of the hunting party go off out of sight, with a gun in his hand, and sneak up on Cheney unseen; d) whether the man who runs Bush's presidency is guilty of manslaughter or murder, in this instance; and e) why the American people are not getting immediate, truthful answers to questions raised by these extremely puzzling and contradictory news reports.

Frankly, I think it's quite possible that Whittington has been dead since the "accident" and the whole thing is being spun. And if we don't consider these possibilities, we will be caught, time and again, figuring out their spin six months later, or a year later, when the worst turns out to be true. Lies--and unbelievable, pervasive deceptiveness and secrecy. Mass murder. Torture. Massive thievery. Widespread illegal spying. Stolen elections. What have they not been guilty of? WHEN are we going to realize that we are being done in by this corporate propaganda machine we call "the mainstream media," operating on behalf of this gang of criminals?

We MUST try to figure things out for ourselves--read between the lines, read the "black holes" in the "news," anticipate, gather what facts we can rely on, theorize, and strategize to get them out. And I think we have learned quite enough about this gang, so far, to be able to assume the worst in every situation. More lies. More murder. More theft. More lawlessness. And more stolen elections. I think we should furthermore begin assuming instability in the junta (things like Cheney maybe blackmailing Bush on Traitorgate--rats turning on rats, in a sinking ship)--that is, we should NOT assume that we have a viable, legitimate, coherent, stable government. I don't think we do. I think our country is in serious peril. (Having an unstable BUSH government--which is hampered as to committing more murders, theft and skulduggery--might end up being good for the country--but it could be a very rocky road to their ouster.)

Harry Whittington, the 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by Vice President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident, has some birdshot lodged in his heart and had a "minor heart attack" this morning, according to hospital officials. NBC's White House Correspondent David Gregory has the latest, and Bob Bazell will explain what this means for Whittington's health. <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11340558/>

From AOL right now:

Hospital officials said they were not concerned about the six to 200 other pieces of birdshot that might still be lodged in Whittington's body. Cheney was using 71/2 shot from a 28-gauge shotgun. Shotgun pellets are typically made of steel or lead; the pellets in 71/2 shot are just under a tenth of an inch in diameter.

56. This whole incident makes me think of the story/joke
Sam Waterston tells himself in the 70's government conspiracy movie, Capricorn One. I'm sure many have heard it in different contexts. It goes something like this.

There was this guy who lived with his mother and his cat. He goes out of town on business and, having no one else to take care of mom and the cat, talks a friend into house sitting. A couple of days after leaving on his business trip the guy calls his house and the friend answers. The guy asks, "How's my cat?"

"It's dead," the friend replies.

Guy: "Dead?! That's horrible! What happened?"

Friend: "The cat got up on the roof somehow and then fell off. I rushed him to the vet, but there was nothing the vet could do."

Guy: "You know, that's a terribly cruel way to break such awful news. You could have been much more sensitive about it, and broken the news a little at a time. I call one day and you tell me that the cat's up on the roof, but he's fine. I call the next day and you tell me that the cat fell off the roof, but you took him to the vet and he's doing fine. The next day you tell me that the cat took a turn for the worse, but the vet's doing everything he can. The day after you say that the vet did everything humanly possible, but the cat passed away. That's a much better way of breaking bad news than just blurting out, 'He's dead'!"

F: "Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry for shocking you that way."

G: "Okay, I guess it's all right. How's my mother doing?"

F: "She's up on the roof, but she's fine."

61. Being in ICU is a living hell.
Even is Whittington recovers enough to not need intensive care & leaves the hospital, Cheney has very probably ruined what remains of this mans life.

65. For the love of God, people, calm down!

This is NOT as big a deal as you are all making it out to be!

So the VP and his buddy and two women take an overnight hunting weekend in a private residence with no spouses along. So they drink a few beers and go off with loaded guns. So the VP shoots his buddy in the face, throat and heart, and the guy is hovering near death. SO WHAT!?! I mean, geez... save your outrage and hysterics for things that really matter, okay? Like a blow job between consenting adults.

And besides, nobody is really dead until President Cheney says they are anyway. It doesn't matter if a person has been in a persistant vegetative state and on life support for fifteen years, and their brain has shrunk to the size of a walnut and the rest of their skull fills with fluid. These people are almost certain to "snap out of it" and lead exciting and rewarding lives, someday. Whittington will die when Cheney TELLS him to die, and not a moment sooner.

So chill.

in the face by a little 28 gauge shotgun stung a little bit, kind of like falling down in the gravel..

before or after Cheney's Rove-approved appearance on Faux, I might be inclined to say I'm wrong.
