Hello All -- Need Some Leads for LEGIT Home-Based Businesses
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 06:16 PM by Stand and Fight
Does anyone hear know of any LEGITIMATE home-based businesses that don't require too steep of an investment? My current job does not allow for a second job because of the schedule. I'm looking to do a little work on the side because there's a financial tidal wave coming my way...

Thanks in advance.

1. Why not graphic design on the side.
That way you can set your own schedule so it won't interfere with your regular job. Work when and how often you want.
Just a thought.

6. I'm a multimedia designer, but I've never freelancedl
How do I go about doing that? Marketing myself and my services... I've no idea.

13. Freelancing is a double edged sword.
It is really cool to work out of the house. It was a daily commute from Long beach to Anaheim that made me start my own business in the first place. I get to take breaks when I want, wear an old t-shirt, and listen to whatever music I want. I am not about to complain about having to much work ('cuz it beats the hell out of the alternative) but sitting in the same chair for eighty hours a week can get wearing. I usually log about 60 hours a week. It takes a lot of self-discipline to not goof off when nobody is watching you.

17. Sounds fine to me...
Rather than doing it at an office I'd be doing it at home. I've taken a lot of online classes and been in the military, so I have the discipline and experience to appreciate working from home. I've several computers that I maintain and a laptop to boot. How do I get started?

14. Why not run a small ad in local papers or......
make up business cards and place them in local bulletin boards. Of course the best thing to do is network. Just let others know that is what you are doing. You may be surprised. I bet there are a lot of small companies out there that would love to have someone redesign/update their website or general media presence for a reasonable fee.

18. I'll have to try that.
I just hope that my 9-5 doesn't mind.

19. A good way to get started in the graphics business is
to do some freebies for some nonprofits. You meet the boards of directors, donors etc. Good word of mouth advertising, which is the best.

2. Yes. Ebay. If you can find a lot of the same items (my friend bought
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 06:24 PM by henslee
a closeout of old rock posters), you can sell them very cheaply.... (he sells the same poster again and again) and you make your money on the shipping. He simply relists the same Ebay ad. He has three or four diff. items. They go for about six or seven dollars each. And then he charges another six or seven for shipping. So he sells about 20 items a week and grosses about 260. a week/1040. a month for just going to the post office. It's all a matter of finding the right item. And if they are not bulky, all the better. Videos. DVDs. Vintage clothing. You'd be suprised what sells.

4. Or some people are making a business out of running ebay sales for others
they bring their stuff over, you do the photographs, the ad, run the auction, and take a commission.

7. Almost all of it is being done in India now, but...
there are still a few of us chugging away out here. However, it is not something you can, contrary to popular belief, just sit down at your computer and "pick up." I've been transcribing, training and doing quality assurance for over 40 years and I still learn something new every day. :)

10. Thanks, Steph...
I'd considered that, but, like Redstone below, I am apprehensive about it. How does one go about doing that?

8. Find something other people hate to do. I knew a gal who
made good money cleaning up crime scenes. If you don't mind blood and gore, good money can be made doing that.

11. Wow... Thanks.
Just didn't see that one coming, but I'm afraid I will take the first part of what you said and run with it. That is, try to find things that people don't like to do.

20. Oh, yeah. You're going to believe someone with a website that's THAT
amateurish and sloppy actually makes that kind of money?

If you do, I got a great deal on a bridge for you.

21. Ebay, it's what I do.
I had good luck by starting here. http://www.worldwidebrands.com/

I'd suggest reading this first. http://www.worldwidebrands.com/wwb/kh_freeebook.asp

I made about $2000 (keep, not gross) in December and hope to do three times that by next Christmas season.

But unlike the commercials tell you ....... IT IS WORK. It's real work but it can be done.

24. My business began as a volunteer effort
It's spread from there by word-of-mouth. I'm to the point now that I'm either going to have to take an employee or partner or start turning business away.

You'd be surprised at how many self-employed folks began their business through volunteering.
