Update 1: Bushes, Friends Celebrate Valentine's Day
02.14.2006, 06:47 PM
Some women demand flowers, others jewelry. First lady Laura Bush made her husband don a tuxedo for Valentine's Day.
For the second year in a row, President Bush and his wife were spending the lovers' holiday formally entertaining friends and associates at the White House.

Fewer than 100 guests were expected to sup in the State Dining Room Tuesday evening, assembled from among the Bushes' friends from Texas and Washington and other notables, according to Peter Watkins, deputy press secretary to Mrs. Bush. After what the White House was calling a "social dinner," which was to be formal but not at the level of an official state dinner, the group was being serenaded down the corridor in the East Room by Grammy-nominated singer and pianist Michael Feinstein.
A printed menu with curlicue script announced the fare: a tasting of American caviar to start; rack of lamb and vegetables for the main course; and, for dessert, baked camembert and a puff pastry called "The Lovebirds" - accompanied by the newly hip rose champagne.
Other details, like the guest list, were being kept under wraps. The media was being allowed in only to see the entertainment portion of the evening.
