Some of us donated a few months ago and a few months before that. Also, some of us are set up for yearly donations, or automatic monthly donations. Don't jump to conclusions.

37. You read me wrong. I didn't mean to imply that I'm donating that
much money or doing all that great. I just didn't like the OP's insinuations that just because there were "only" 1100 donations that we were a bunch of slackers.

8. That's so true!
I am living check-to-check on unemployment and a substitute teachers salary! I have a 8 month old daughter, a mortgage, and other bills to pay. I know we all have our problems, don't mean to try and make mind sound worst than any one else's. Just wanted to say that if I could donate, I would.

Volunteer with a local dem candidate -- even stuffing envelopes if that's all your schedule will permit.

Reach out to someone at church.

Or give a buck to a guy on the street who may need it even more than you.

12. And.......
....you have to remember, a lot of those are republican losers who have an account so they can see what real people are talking about. Judging by the success with the donation drives, I think DU does pretty good. There are a lot of sites and blogs that require donations to survive, and many of us are members at several sites. I give to several just so I can have an opportunity to read what sensible people think!

At best there are 'maybe' 40K actual users;

This is the fastest paced fund drive I have seen in 4+ years;

It is right after X-mas;

Many folks such as myself are getting baraged by local campaigns right now as well;

Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 08:52 AM by KzooDem
If you would bother to look at the top of the screen, you will plainly see that the goal is 1,200 donations. There are currently 1146. My math says that the goal has been 95.5% attained. And you think that's sad? There was a call, and it appears we are answering it. WTF is your beef??

It must be difficult being so self-righteous.

16. Hey T-Rat!
:hi:

There has been a lot of patting ourselves on the back for doing this drive in record time, huh?

Of course, what that number doesn't figure in is:

Not all accounts are active
The monthly donors
the once a year donors
the quarterly donors
the gang waiting for Friday payday(!)
the unemployed
the list goes on...

all folks (with the top group being exceptions) who either contribute regularly but just not in this spate of donation or, who will at some point.

But you are right. It would be great to see many more donations. Heck, you and I both know an area of the board where a very small percentage of the users donate :D

And now, I'm gonna put on my flame-retardant suit and sit back and enjoy some :popcorn: You might want to do the same! :hi:

19. Goal of 1,200
What does that tell you? Here's what it should tell you.....many of those 85,000+ "registered" posters are not "active" posters. Between the Freepers, trolls, just plain assholes and the occassional good person wrongly maligned who've been tombstone and those who just don't visit here, the number of "active posters" is probably a modest fraction of "registered" users.

24. a better way to judge donations
click on one of the really active threads, and scroll through and see how many folks have stars next to their names. Way more than 1 out of 85. That will tell you how many active posters have donated, rather than how many donated to this particular fund drive.

33. It also doesn't include those of us who mail our donations...
I don't know that the count at the top of the page reflects a lack of support that you imply that it does. I know that I can never get my donation mailed fast enough for it to be counted in the donation drive count. There are a lot of other factors, too, like the monthly donations, which aren't counted in the drive.

Don't rain on the parade, TX-RAT. The valentine heart donation drive idea was an inspiration, imho.

36. As I tell my children...
Always look around and be aware of what you have that others do not. Always take note and do not look down on them or put them down in any way. Treat everyone as equals with the hope that they will treat you the same way.

It seems, in life, that it is so much easier to tear things down than to build them up. At this board we should all be in this together. We are all supposed to be on the same side. I think we should encourage each other. If you search my name then you will find I have already talked about the donations and how well this promotion is working.

This board is made up of people from all levels of life. Some donate yearly. Some donate monthly. Some can not afford to donate but they give more life to this board than any donation ever possibly could.

We do not change things by complaining and if someone must complain then think through an answer as well. If we all come to the table with nothing but complaints then that will be all we have to show for ourselves. If you can not give solutions for your complaint then you should try to see some bright sides such as how quickly this fund drive has gone. Or perhaps you can point out how great the love is on this board. I went around trying to find people without hearts last night and I actually had to look through several threads before finding one.

People who truly believe in this sight give what they can. It may be money. It could be research. It might be a drawing or a joke. We are a part of a community and in any community we all contribute in ways we can. Let's build on this wonderful community and build up the people instead of bringing them down.

I am proud of the job everyone has done donating money and distributing hearts. I am even more proud of the job you folks do disbursing information as well as saving it so we will not forget. I am proud of this board and all of you. I am proud to be a DUer.

You pay my heating bills and/or replace my 50 year old furnace, buy my medicine this month and I will donate to this drive.

Otherwise I will have to live with your disappointment.

What's $5 or $10 is something I use to be able to say even when I became disabled. Not after I had to replace my roof and not this winter.

Yes, that is pretty sad.

which is a few times a year and this just doesn't happen to be that time. I also give to many other great organizations and causes throughout the year when I can afford it. 44. Try living on my $848 a month and see where you have any left
over for 'extras.' And actually, once I pay the 'real' bills, I only have about $200.00 to live on for the month. And that's for food, doctor bills, medications, gas, etc.

You want to be disappointed? Go look in the mirror at someone who complains yet knows nothing.
