New Orleans Jazz Fest
The lineup for the NO Jazz Fest is out now.
It would be a good way to show support for New Orleans and enjoy some outstanding music at the same time.

I'm gonna try like hell to be there cause I'm working on moving back down there right around that time.
It would be great to meet some other DU'ers.

The event takes place over two weekends. April 28-30 and May 5-7.

Dave Matthews, Bob Dylan, Keith Urban, Paul Simon crowd Jazz Fest calendar

First weekend

The Meters, Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan, Yolanda Adams, Allen Toussaint with special guest Elvis Costello, Ani DiFranco, Dr. John, Hugh Masekela, Keb' Mo', Yerba Buena, Rebirth Brass Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Irvin Mayfield & the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Galactic, Snooks Eaglin, Cowboy Mouth, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Terence Blanchard, Walter "Wolfman" Washington & the Roadmasters, Sonny Landreth, Kermit Ruffins & the Barbecue Swingers, the subdudes, Ritmo Caribeño, John Mooney & Bluesiana, Terrance Simien, Anders Osborne, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet, Charmaine Neville. Plus a gazillion more!

Second weekend

Fats Domino, Jimmy Buffett, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Keith Urban, The Ohio Players, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Special Ed & Big Daddy Kane, India "The Princess of Salsa", Irma Thomas, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Doug Kershaw, Little Feat, Koko Taylor, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Sr. & the Greater St. Stephen Mass Choir, The Radiators, Angelique Kidjo, Pete Fountain, Donald Harrison with special guests George Coleman & Eddie Palmieri, Le Grand Ballet "Ngalam" du Senegal, Yonder Mountain String Band, Buckwheat Zydeco, Deacon John, Nicholas Payton, Chris Owens, The Ladies of New Orleans R&B featuring The Dixie Cups.

There are so many more listed (see link) but I didn't want to violate the DU 4 paragraph rule.

Really outstanding lineup!

2. Have you guys seen Robert Randolph play?
The man is fucking incredible. He was Clapton's opener on OKC a while back. One of the best shows I've ever seen...followed by Clapton which made it even better. EC brought RR back out on stage later. Blew me away!

11. I fell in Love with RR and the Family Band
a few years back when they played at Jazz Fest. I had never heard anything like it. Inspirational tunes...we really need that down here now.

there's no sound like Robert Randolph's

5. No Paul McCartney?
I heard a rumor that he would be there. He has worked with the Meters and is a big NO music fan. Still an incredible lineup, though. B-)

8. That doesn't include
all the other stuff that goes on around town during festival, or at least used to. If you've never been to Jazz Fest, you don't know what you're missing.

9. So what are they all doing to rebuild New Orleans?
When I hear something positive then and only then might I go.

I know someone from Metarie, old family and all. They got rich off of FEMA and Katrina and they were already rich as in millionaires. (they are old family and glad to see the 9th ward finally wiped out).

I'm not coming to JazzFest to make them feel better.

So many musicians.............

May all the musicians coming be socially conscience.

10. If you show up, it puts money back into the economy
If you eat, sleep or drink while you're there.

Considering many of these musicians ARE New Orleans, I'm betting they have a considerable moral conscience concerning their city. To me it is important to revitalize the spirit of the city in order to inspire rebirth of the material N.O.

Jazz Fest is good medicine.

Welcome to DU.

13. Just being there is more than most people are doing.
Tourism is NO's bread and butter. Bringing people (and their $$$) into the city is the what needs to happen to bring it back to life...

15. That would be so wonderful
to go to!

I saw picture of Fats Domino in "In Touch" magazine and the article said "the city's annual Jazz & Heritage Festival will take place at its usual location, the historic Fair Grounds, on April 28-30 and May 5-7.

"It draws an average of 500,000 fans and is expected to bring in $200 million in revenue..a shot in the arm for this beleaguered city"!!

Thank you, Fats Domino and all the musicians who are going to play!

I have been mad for Doug Kershaw since I first saw him when I was just a kid. And the rest of the lineup is awesome as well.

17. FYI- on IFC they are having some specials
about the New Orleans music scene- history, culture, etc. It's called 'Dancing to New Orleans'. Also, last night, they aired a documentary I highly recommend. It's called something like 'I'm Laughin' At You' and it follows some older Mississippi blues artists. Great stuff!

I went to JazzFest last year for the first time and I would love to go again. I'm just concerned that hotel costs will be through the roof, due to limited accommodations. I'm not ruling it out, though! I love New Orleans and the line-up looks incredible!! :loveya:

20. Hotels are pricey
At the moment the cheapest room I've seen in the nearby vicinity is $199. There may be cheaper rooms further away.

18. The RAGIN' CAJUN!
I, too remember Doug Kershaw from my childhood. He used to be on Ed Sullivan and Johnny Carson. It was cool because my parents liked him as much as I did. Awfully close to the start of hurricane season but I want to go! JetBlue goes to New Orleans cheap, any suggestions for low budget accommodations?

BTW: I love your avatar HeeBGBz! Slider... mmmmm :loveya:

19. It usually takes a month or so before the hurricanes kick in
I'll be bringing and living in an old camper I'm fixing up. I'm hoping to find some place like a campsite or RV park. Otherwise I'll just drive over from Biloxi. I'll keep an eye out on the hotel/motel situation and if I find anything out, I'll let you know.

Thanks egadsbrain. I'm on a bad TRex binge. I turn on The Slider and dance around the room. Marc Bolan. What a tasty treat he was.

There are sooooo many artists at the Jazz Fest. I really feel like I want to immerse myself in as much of the music as I can.

Here's hoping we all make it, if we wanna go.

This year is bound to be utterly amazing, just due to the fact that Nola is getting its groove back.
