Don't REAL bird hunters use dogs?
I'm not a hunter myself, but I've watched gun dogs in action and am amazed at the training it takes to breed and hunt with some of these beautiful companions -- the setters, retrievers, and pointers. The real sport is in the connection between the hunter and dog working as a team.

What kind of sport is it when you just drive around in your Escalade shooting at pen-raised birds? That's not sport -- that's just killing for the sake of being able to blow something away.

2. Some use dogs, some don't...
As a dog lover, I'm just as glad Cheney and crew don't hunt with dogs. I'd rather a republican lawyer get "peppered" than a poor defenseless dog.

5. Or if he hunted with the Chimperor...
We'd have to worry about him blowing away endangered species, since President Dumbnuts can't tell one bird from another.

3. Canned hunts, such as the little Cheney adventure,
do not count as hunting.

I am a hunter. When I used to quail hunt, we did not have a dog, but each took turns flushing coveys.

Dogs are helpful for retreiving waterfowl and pheasants, though.

4. In his conversation today Cheney mentioned "the dogs".
That's just one more reason none of this story adds up! Hunters are always very carefule where they shoot so they don't hit one of the dogs!

You see, the BS they were blabbing for the last few days about Harry not announcing himself is pure BS because DOGS don't do much announcing! The HUNTER has to keep his EYES OPEN!

6. Excellent point!
If Cheney was shooting that low he could have easily hit one of the dogs in the field. Another reason I'm not buying this B.S. story.

8. Well you see the dog was "on point" behind him (dick)
and the eyes in the back of his head saw it and he turned on the flushed bird
and hit Mr W as he was walking up behind the Vice President w/ a loaded
gun and the secret service did nothing.

Damn I wish you liberal bloggers would stop w/ the conspiracy stuff.

7. Yes. But that's real hunting.
This was a staged, captive birds, pseudo-hunting-type, macho man exercise.

9. Sure do - what Cheney was doing was slaughter, not hunting.
My dad hunted quail for years with his dog - a Brittany/Springer mix - would flush and retrieve.

10. Wow, I'd hate to be Dick Cheney's retriever
That's probably a high-turnover position, right there. I can only imagine how many he's "peppered" in his day.

11. it depends on the dog really ...
I had a setter/spaniel cross a good few years back and he had all the instincts to make an excellent birder, a really beautiful and intelligent animal as well as the smartest dog I've known. They aren't just used in waterfowling and can be useful for retrieving kills in a dry-land shoot. Some breeds are specialists mainly used to flush prey, some to recover downed birds.

My cross set well, loved retrieving and I couldn't keep him out of the water. Sadly he died some time back (*sniff*).

14. to have a good dog makes you rich
I had a yellow lab for 13.5 yrs.

When he was 1 year we were @ farm in the fall with and doing a little pheasant hunting.

He pointed the bird, flushed it, and brought it back .... the others were; wow what training ...
I really did very little .... I still miss him.

This whole story does not pass the smell test .......
