2. I wonder if Cheney has enough emotional empathy to care about
Harry Whittington or anyone else. My guess is he wouldn't sacrifice a minute or a buck for another human being, at least not out of altruism.

I think he remains in office through the rest of this winter, even as Fitzgerald intensifies the Plame investigation.

Then as spring rolls around, and Congressional reps begin to poll local races and find Dubya's policy disasters and Dick's snarling puss are major drags on their chances, there will then come a press conference in which Uncle Dick's physician "insists" that he step down for "health reasons."

I certainly won't miss the old lizard, although I'm fearful that a replacement would be even worse. Kindasleazy, for example.

4. his problems are 1000 times worse if whittington dies
so yes, in this case, he DOES care very much about whittington.

and that's as close to emotional empathy as someone like cheney will ever come.

7. Ok, yeah. From that angle, Dick would care that Harry's on the road to
a rapid, full recovery.

But apart from covering his own behind, Dick Cheney strikes me as being as empathetic as a rabid polar bear.

8. Resign? He has bolder plans.
As this evidence shows.

There is a transcript of Cheney and Whittington talking during the hunt, to be found here:

We'd have a big celebration, sure, but then guess who gets to appoint the next VP?

And if he's not confirmed by the Congress, guess who gets to appoint the next VP?

And if that nominee is not confirmed by the Congress, guess who gets to appoint the next VP?

Given the Democrats fortitude on the Scalito nomination, I'm not left with a lot of confidence that they would have a stomach for the fight anyway.

Bush could basically appoint the heir apparent for the 2008 nomination for the vice presidency, which could multiply the other side's chances a great deal.

11. I wasn't so much wishing as asking....
...and I think you make an astute observation. Dem leadership hasn't inspired a great deal of confidence among the rank-and-file lately. I keep hoping they'll find their collective voice and challenge these criminals and they keep rolling over.
