Red State, Meet Police State
Edited on Thu Feb-16-06 03:45 PM by im10ashus

A federal employee gets hassled by Homeland Security for antiwar stickers on his car. Is it a mistake, a new rule, or the part of a trend of the First Amendment being bullied out of existence? Read the transcript, read the rules and decide for yourself

Dwight Scarbrough's idea of political dissent is one that rubs some people the wrong way. He likes to blame his compulsion for peaceful troublemaking on his birthday: October 2, the same as Ghandi. However, a few of Scarbrough's techniques are all his own--especially when it comes to his truck.

For instance, when the Iraq War was looking imminent, not long after September 11, Dwight attached a garbage bag to the back of his truck bed. He splattered the bag and the truck with ketchup and added a sign reading, "This veteran knows that our children are worth more than a $6.95 body bag." When he drove down the freeway, the bag would inflate and appear occupied.

"That one was a little in-your-face and on-the-edge," Scarbrough recalls. "It got a lot of response."

Scarbrough wasn't always so anti-military. During the waning years of the Cold War, he even served five years on a nuclear submarine for the U.S. Navy. But now, instead of trying to stop the spread of "red" states like China and the USSR, Dwight lives in a red state--Idaho. He's the founder and head of Boise's local branch of Veterans for Peace, he leads seminars exposing military recruitment practices in schools, and he--and his truck--are fixtures at nearly every Democratic, antiwar or pro-peace event in town.

cont'd...

with the coworker taping everything, the ACLU and other lawyers offering their services pro bono if he is hassled again.

9. Well a citation would have been even better
because then there would have been a court case, and then there would have been introductions like, fan, meet shit, shit, fan.

It's a ticket. He would have had to get a court date and those two bubba's would have had to show up to court. Plenty of time to get the press involved. Oh it would have been a thing of beauty, especially with a legal recording of harrassment and their wilfull misinterpretation of the law admitted as evidence.

But this was pretty good too.

12. This is what we've come to
Secretive government agents in semi-hidden offices pressuring people to relinquish their rights.

From later in the article:

(The "I' references the reporter.)

I was only able to confirm the location of the office after asking the security officer at the Natural Resource Complex, whose job (ostensibly, at least) it is to enforce the rules concerning pamphlets, dogs and other controlled substances on federal property. He would not comment about the incident, saying, "If this is about what I think it's about, I'm not allowed to say nothing." He referred me to "FPS, Federal Courthouse, Department of Homeland Security," to find someone who would be able to comment. When I asked who I should say referred me, he covered his nameplate with his hand.

The "office," once I found it, wasn't much of an office at all, from a service perspective. The door was locked and there was neither a receptionist nor a desk at the front window. When I rang the doorbell, a woman emerged from a nearby cubicle and spoke to me through a tennis-ball-sized hole in the window. She would not confirm the name or identity of the officers, nor their badge numbers (Scarbrough, of course, had written them all down). I slipped a business card through the hole, and by press time, no one had called me back.

It's a damn good thing Dwight Scarbrough knew his rights and was experienced enough to proceed as he did. And kudos for him for going to the ACLU and continuing to insist on expressing his views as is his right. Imagine if this was someone who was not as well informed. Would "Officer R." have intimidated them into removing the items? How many Officer R's are doing similar things right now which won't be reported.

We should all share his concern with this situation. I can't express this any better than Dwight Scarbrough, so I'll close with his statement from the end of the article:

"Bottom line: My rights are very dear to me. I served my country to defend them," he says. "And one of the things I was defending was free speech. It's the First Amendment for a reason--not the last, not the middle. The first."

14. Nominated.
I went to the feed store yesterday, to get supplies for my daughters' rabbits (which had young 'uns). There was a conservative looking fellow there, getting supplies for his farm. When I left, I noticed his vehicle, parked next to mine, because it had two beautiful Golden Retrievers in it. On the back was a fairly large American flag. It took a second for me to see that he had taken a black marker and wrote "IMPEACH BUSH" on it.

19. I've noted before
that along the side of Rt 7 in Mt. Upton, in rural Chenango County, NY there is a large sign saying "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS -- BRING THEM HOME." It's outside of a family business; the father and son are veterans who are registered republicans. The war is not popular.

20. I have, sadly, severed my relations with a relative.
She's famous for sending e-mails that say "Support our troops = Support our President" and the like. I replied all and said "Support Our Troops = BRING THEM HOME" and she went ballistic. It's quite sad because I always took her for the more compassionate and liberal family members. I guess politics brings out the good and bad in people. Maybe one day she will understand. But I won't hold my breath.

My e-mail signature now reads like this:

NOTICE: Due to Presidential Executive Orders, the National Security Agency may have read this email without warning, warrant, or notice, and certainly without probable cause. They may do this without any judicial or legislative oversight. You have no recourse nor protection save to call for the impeachment of the current President.

That should bring out the bad men from wherever they lurk.

25. Every American Patriot should agree with this

The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.
-- Theodore Roosevelt, 1912 (emphasis added)
