8. Could it be the makeup, not bruising?
I know some women who use a slightly yellow color foundation, as it's supposed to cover well and look more natural. Maybe they were trying too hard to cover the bruises, and under the intense camera lighting it became too obvious.

Just a thought...

31. maybe some of it......
Yellow-toned makeup is supposed to neutralize purple, like undereye circles and bruising....green the same for red like acne, etc--usually the end result looks like you have yellow or green makeup over a wound, though, if it's used for actual damage.

55. Bruising from blood thinners, swelling from steroids...
along with whatever bruises and marks the pellets caused.

Blood thinners kept him from throwing clots when his heart went to an irregular beat and steroids were to stop the heart's inflammation caused by the pellet that was in/near the heart.
The side effects of the drugs he got in the hospital have probably done more damage than the shooting itself. And he will probably be on these drugs for the rest of his life..just in lower doses than he got in the hospital.

21. What happens if he gets necrotizing fasciitis?
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 05:38 PM by TahitiNut
It's not outside the realm of possibility that a flesh-eating disease would follow such an injury when the projectiles are left embedded.

His "raspy" voice could be a sympton of pharyngitis (streptococcal sore throat), one of the infections cause by a group A Streptococcus, like necrotizing fasciitis. The yellow hue of the skin indicates pus deposits. I'd be willing to be they've go him loaded to the gills with antibiotics, only slightly effective against the exotoxin A bacteriophage.

83. Real cause of yellowing of the skin
after careful examination of photographs, like Senator Frist, I can diagnose the distance Harry was from the blast. Damn close. The pellets were not the total cause of the injuries. The hot gases from the barrel must have been within 10 to 15 feet of his face.

22. Doctors initally estimated
"more than 5 but probably less than 150-200" pellets hit Whittington. I count at least ten strike marks on his face alone, and there may be more that are not visible due to swelling, coloration, or camera angle, or that I am mistaking for age spots or other skin blemishes.

Peppered, my ass! There was a reason the docs used those numbers as the upper estimate. He got hit with almost the entire 262 pellet load. Couple that with the fact that the brunt of it apparently was in his shoulder and chest, and you have Cheney firing on a downward angle. Why? Because Big Dick said Whittington was in a gully when the shot was fired, with only part of his upper body exposed. At 30 yards, Cheney would have had to be shooting downward -- a big no-no as I understand the rules of hunting. Too much risk to the dogs. And there were dogs. Cheney said that they were on point at the covey that he was ultimately tracking when he shot Whittington. That leads to three other inconsistencies. 1) If there were dogs along, why was a 78 year-old out schlepping after a downed bird? 2) If Cheney wasn't shooting at a downward angle, Whittington HAD to have been closer than 30 yards. 3) If Cheney was swinging on a bird as he claims, but WAS doing it at a downward angle, this gives lie to his claim they were hunting wild quail. Released quail, with clipped wings can't get up very high. the last is a minor point, but they will lie even if the truth will serve them equally well.

It's pretty clear to me that Cheney fucked-up, big time. Unfortunately, the evidence is mostly circumstantial, and the primary parties are all singing the same song - I suspect the media will lose interest shortly.

In any case, I believe the impression made by the event will linger for years to come... Cheney? Wasn't he the idiot VP who shot his hunting partner?

I count at least twelve pellet wounds (12>2 by a factor of 6) on his face and neck alone. What does his trunk look like, fergodsake? What was the point of ever using 2 as the bottom of the range? How disingenuous.

That's also why Whittington refused to go through a scan (was it a CT scan?) at the hospital, which would have revealed just how many pellets were imbedded in his body, and where.

39. I think he saw Cheney prepare to shoot - and Whit turned his head away
...from what I've read of the injury, Whittington has alot of shot across the front chest too (i.e. pellets in heart and liver). I suspect he was actually facing Cheney, and seeing that he was about to be shot, instinctively turned away - but only got his head partly turned before he was hit.

That's gotta be a scaring feeling to recognize you're about to be shot.

But, then his heart is on the left. How did a shot reach that? The liver is on the upper right side, high under the ribs, on the right.
You must be right, more direct to the chest, with the head turning away.

79. Was he holding up a dead quail in his right hand?
In other words, did Cheney swerve around to see "something" in the gully and it was Harry holding up a dead quail--then Cheney shot the dead quail hitting Harry? I mean I know how quail fly up from the ground in a startling group.

It just looks to me like he took the full brunt of this shot. And now I wonder if Cheney was also shooting at a dead bird without seeing Harry holding it.

This is just terrible; I still cannot believe it.

30. No makeup--just week-old bruises in all their glory
A good coat of makeup would have hidden the worst of that color, as many a woman with a black eye has done. Somehow I seriously doubt Mr W would have allowed such a thing.

I hate to think what's hidden by his shirt and suit -- that "peppering" could have cost him his eye or worse. The man is 78, and this has been quite a physical trauma.

BTW, Molly Ivins writes this week that Mr Whittington is a good egg, a decent man. It's a shame he was palling around with someone who isn't.

They have been covering each other's asses for DECADES. Believe THIS.. Ole Whitty will be handsomely rewarded for his loyalty..

The fact that a SEVENTY-EIGHT year old man is "still in the workforce" says a lot about this gang of thieves. They NEVER "retire". There are deals to be made..on their death beds, if necessary. They are wheeler-dealers and NEVER pass up an opportunity to advance their agenda or to line their pockets.

Ole Whitty is lucky that he survived this event, but even if he had DIED, his WIDOW would have been front and center, apologizing for "Dick's Very Bad Day".

42. He may be all forgiving of Cheney but if this was my Dad...
....I would be so angry. This looks like he was closer than 30 yards and it looks to me like Cheney hit him dead on. He did not simply step into peripheral scattered bird shot.

57. Surprised they didn't cover him in a Taliban burka
when he left the hospital...but they needed a PR stunt to try and convince the public that being "discharged from the hospital" is the same as being "fully recovered". Much like chimp's people have the media downplay the word "wounded" when we hear "x number of soldiers were
wounded today in Iraq". So now we will have the next 24 hour newscycle being that this guy is at home and doing well, recovered nicely.

60. Notice how yellow the bruises are. Whittington said he was shot FRIDAY
instead of the officially claimed Saturday. Is that a mistake as the WH wants us to believe, or is it what really happened?

thread title (2-17-06 GD): Question: Why does Mr. Whittington say Friday?
On camera, Whittington says the shooting happened on FRIDAY, not SATURDAY as has been reported.
WASHINGTON POST VIDEO here – the “Friday” comment is just before 1 minute (there is an ad before the Whittington video starts):

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=454105&mesg_id=456224
(I’ve also saved a full-screen shot but did not upload it because of its size.)
Reuters reports (http://in.today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=worldNews&storyID=2006-02-18T020053Z_01_NOOTR_RTRJONC_0_India-237197-1.xml) the speech and gratuitously adds, after the “Friday” statement that he meant Saturday: “"We all assume certain risks in whatever we do. Regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen. And that's what happened last Friday," Whittington said, meaning on Saturday.”

85. I'm waiting for Lynn to come out of the closet.
Do you think that the reason Dick is messing around with the ambassador to Switzerland is because Lynn is gay? Or is it because Dick is getting under the table money from Halliburton via the Armstrongs and then to the ambassador straight to a Swiss bank account.

86. i think there is a big pit of writhing snakes under the ranch house
and dick cheney stumbled upon an ancient burial ground just as he was about to pull the trigger. and the snake rose out of the earth and wrestled Whittington to the ground, whereupon dick cheney fired upon him then ran away crying.

88. I don't think there will be a lawsuit
I think Cheney will take plenty of millions our tax money and stuff it firmly in the pockets of the Whittington family. Actually, the family has no self-respect. If it were MY grandpa, I'd make damned sure everyone knew I was pissed.

94. No lawsuit
You could tell by the things Harry said about "assuming risks" and "accidents happen"---this is all defense lawyer speak. (civil cases)

In fact, shockingly most people of that persuasion would say if he sued, it would be a "frivolous" lawsuit.

This is tort reform, folks. If you get your face shot off by someone who is negligent, you should not be able to seek redress in the courts according to these people.

96. I may be posting this...
...on the wrong thread, but having seen these pictures - particularly after all the images of a 'ripped' Whittington torso with a bird-shot pattern all over the left side of his chest, shoulder, neck and face - I'm really confused. Originally, with the idea that his wounds were on the left side I questioned some of the initial speculation that Whittington had been on Cheney's left - because if he was, or even if he had been walking up from behind, he would have had to have been facing away from the 'field of fire'. Now that the story is that Cheney was on the right...and that he had made either a 90 degree turn to the right, or, as some have said, he actually did a counterclockwise 270 in order to indeed fire to his right...and again, with Whittington's wounds being on his right side, the man would have had to have been facing away from that same field of fire.

Bottom line, these guys - Cheney or Whittington - don't appear to have been paying much attention to anything resembling gun safety. And if the bird Cheney was going after had indeed flushed to his right rear - as has also been said - then the Armstrong ranch has got some pretty sorry hunting dogs. Now that I think of it, I've never heard anything mentioned about dogs at all. Must have been where the feed stations were where they placed the 'pen-raised' birds in the first place and that great sportsman Dick Cheney simply forgot where they were supposed to be.

97. Get that poor guy protection! Molly Ivins and the links to old news
articles show that Whittington is one of the good republicans who has fought hard for those trapped by the prison/industrial system to quote murdered Gary Webb. He also was fighting Eminent Domain and with his law background and millions was a thorn in bushco/cheneyco's side.

I think maybe he went shooting with Cheney to iron out some details in really helping people and Cheney who was under the gun for much more serious (in terms of the damage to all Americans and our intelligence communities' ability to do their jobs) in the Plame outing.

There were a number of scary things going down beginning with the passage of the "Patriot" Act by the threatened Congress with only 2 Dems and one Independent voting against -- Feingold, Byrd and Jeffords who is retiring from the Senate.

I remember the runaway small plane when a version of the Patriot Act was due for a vote and WaPo said that the Secret Service grabbed Nancy Pelosi out of her shoes and I did not think it was a bit funny because later that night in an unsual nighttime Congressional meeting almost all the Dems who had been opposed to the "Patriot" Act VOTED FOR IT.
