David Gregory: Why the Cheney Story Matters
David Gregory: Why the Cheney Story Matters
Posted by Pamela Leavey
February 18th, 2006 @ 11:52 am
Following up on Ron’s post earlier on the media and the Cheney story, David Gregory, Chief White House Correspondent for NBC, has a post on his blog on “why the Cheney story matters.” Here’s a few quips from Gregory:

I’m in the business of getting information — as much of it as possible. The public and I don’t always get as much as I think we deserve, but I keep trying. I also try to demand straight answers. Covering politicians, I have to work harder to get them. I have not made any judgments about the facts of this story as it pertains to what happened on the Armstrong ranch. I have stuck to reporting the facts. I do, however feel it’s appropriate to push hard for full and immediate disclosure from our country’s highest leaders about their conduct — public and private. My view is, as elected officials with unparalleled influence over the lives of the American people, the President and Vice President owe the public information about their activities. I see myself as a proxy for the public that has raised questions about what happened and why the Vice President did not immediately disclose it. Furthermore, when a sitting Vice President shoots a man, it’s a helluva story — worthy of public notice and discussion. Therefore, I think it’s appropriate to question the White House about why the Vice President chose to disregard the President’s normal procedures for public disclosure. Mr. Cheney, in my view, acted as if he had something to hide. He also chose to allow a witness to this accident and the White House press secretary to spend three days portraying this as the fault of the shooting victim, Harry Whittington. Wednesday, Mr. Cheney changed course and took the blame. That invites press scrutiny.

This episode was also emblematic of how the Vice President chooses to communicate with the press and by extension the public. It also revealed tension within the White House between the staffs of the President and Vice President.

Gregory also notes the whining from the right wing news sources and blogosphere that alleges a “left-wing, overly cynical, prissy White House press corps” — which Gregory announces is “nonsense”…

1. rw'er on maher last night going after helen for 144 questions on
shooting opposed to four questions on other important stuff. what helen didnt say was if scotty had answered the question, there would NOT have been 144 questions on the shooting and they would have been able to get beyond to the other, more important stuff. instead with bushco constant game and lying once again, these questions werent answered as the other stuff wasnt talked about either.

5. Yes. There was really one question.
They had to ask it 144 times. "Why the 18 hour delay?" McClellan suddenly represented "the American people" when he said we don't care. I thought he represented the president.

2. Gregory is right!!! The initial press release was false
Armstrong wasn't a witness... and Whittington had superficial wounds and leaving that day... and that he snuck up on Cheney...

Ya there is alot here that shows Cheney is hiding something and a liar......

3. F that creep Gregory and all the other WH Press Corpse Kneepadders
if he'd pursued ANY of the multmyriad depredations with anything approaching the vigor with which he's approached this mostly non-story, maybe we'd have had only four years of fascism, instead of, possibly, an eon.

screw him and his self-righteous delusions

he's no less a stenographer than the likes of Judy Miller or Sue Schmidt

8. thanks....did you make a comment on one of the Maher show threads?
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 04:11 PM by Gabi Hayes
IIRC, you took the words right out of my mouth, WRT how useless he is, how totally shallow and unprepared for the RadRight talking points spewed by his foaming guests

where were those weasels' outrage over the "mushroom cloud" lies, or any of the hundreds told by Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld, ad multinauseum, during the runup to the war that cemented our place in history as the Nazi Germany of the 21st Century?

huh?

9. Yes, I did respond that way on one of the Maher threads. Yesterday
on DU, Stephanie had a thread showing a banner behind the sociopath in chief that said Securing America. They certainly have. We are and irrevocably now a fascist state. I sit here feeling totally inept and helpless knowing that right now there is nothing I can do. No matter how many calls we make, letters, faxes and emails that we write. How many times we march, it makes no difference at all. They own the politicians, the voting machines, the Supreme Court and the media.

6. The long delay invites questions from the press (on behalf of the public)
Edited on Sat Feb-18-06 03:39 PM by kenny blankenship
did Cheney try to get the whole thing hushed up--handled without involving the proper authorities, without making the proper reports and within the proper intervals? Was there an attempt in those first hours (an attempt that failed) to somehow avoid reporting the VPs involvement in a shooting altogether? Is the delay really a symptom of an attempt to completely falsify the medical and police reports, in other words, so that someone else besides Cheney would be found to bear the blame.

14. Here are LINKS to the Feb 14 WH Press conference, one of them showing
Mr. Gregory in one of his confrontations with McClellan, obviously frustrated with the non-answers and runarounds:
VIDEO - links to 2 Can-o-Fun clips for Feb 14 WH Press Conference:
For most of this, McClellan is blatantly dodging questions. He keeps insisting that they should "move on" to matters of more importance to "the American People." Some interesting comments from the reporters. One said that it "doesn't pass the sniff test." But that was NOT the Fox News reporter, who unctuously repeated McClellan's talking points rather than asking an actual question.
Part I: (shows David Gregory's frustration with McClellan's stonewalling):

Part II:
http://www.canofun.com/cof/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=16721&mid=100739#M100739

There was also a Feb 13 thread specifically on McClellan and Gregory battling off-camera:about hushup of the shooting:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x403709
thread title (2-13-06 GD): WOW! David Gregory v. McClellan go at it off camera. . .Tribune reports!
Comment/excerpt: “Why was the White House relying on a Texas rancher to get the word of Cheney's hunting accident out over the weekend, asked Gregory, accusing McClellan of ‘ducking and weaving.’ … ‘You don't have to yell,’ McClellan said. ‘I will yell,'' said Gregory, pointing a finger at McCellan at his dais. "If you want to use that podium to try to take shots at me personally, which I don’t appreciate, then I will raise my voice, because that’s wrong.’ “

I've gathered the Cheney Shooting threads I've seen into a compilation which is posted here in General Discussion:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x456727
thread title (2-17-06 GD): COMPILATION OF CHENEY SHOOTING THREADS - with comments/excerpts:
Comment/excerpt: Repost of updated thread started in this forum Feb 14. At time of posting, it is identical to the version in the Research Forum.

and here in the Research Forum:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=358x3133
thread title (2-14-06 RESEARCH FORUM): Compilation of threads on 2/06 Cheney shooting incident, including videos

Note that the VIDEO threads are organized at the end.
