Deborah Howell, WP: Milbank's Olberman appearance was "a mistake"

Crossing the Line on a Cable Show?

By Deborah Howell
Sunday, February 19, 2006; Page B06

Dana Milbank can be controversial with readers. The Post reporter has his fans -- and I can be one of them -- but I think his appearance on MSNBC last week was a mistake in judgment.

Milbank wore hunting gear -- an orange stocking cap and striped vest and gloves -- on Keith Olbermann's show Monday night and made several meant-to-be-humorous remarks about Vice President Cheney's hunting accident.....
....
The mail was swift and sure. I got hundreds of e-mails, many prompted by conservative blogs. A number of readers asked the same question as Mark O'Brien of Mechanicsburg, Pa.: "Is Milbank an opinion columnist or a reporter?"
....
He does sometimes cross the line into commentary -- in an Oct. 12 column, he counted how many times President Bush blinked during a television interview, and in a Nov. 3 column he frequently referred to Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito's rumpled clothes and personal awkwardness. Both columns seemed like put-downs. On Jan. 27, he wrote that President Bush gave a "Bourbonic performance" at a news conference.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/18/AR2006021801098_2.html

I guess none of those e-mails from conservatives were profane. Surely the tender Ms Howell would have mentioned that.

5. I sent a positive email to them
Mr. Milbank showed great wit, wearing orange hunting regalia on Countdown with Keith Olbermann last night. The tongue-in-cheek parody of Karen Hughes dressing in camouflage gear to mock John Kerry made me fall off my couch laughing.

Cheers to Mr. Milbank for his sense of humor!

6. How quickly they forget.
When the Rove and co. made fun of Kerry by dressing in hunting garb. Does no one understand Irony?

8. Since Ms. Howell is obviously spinning for the conservatives
I think the Post should be pressured to get an ombuds-person for the progressive readers.

10. I did not see this appearance, but Milbank is a tool to the right, anyway.
He attacked Conyers's DSM hearings in an article in the WaPo, for example and mocked Conyers and the Democrats for doing this.

May be DH did not like the very mild criticisms he made at Bush and Cheney, but be sure that these criticisms are nothing else than a way to avoid talking about the real issues (Alito's record, Cheney's tendency to secrecy, Bush's lies, for example).

11. I saw it and figured he was making a joke out of the shooting which was
the first way the MSM were told by Rove to spin it ...before Wittington had his "mild heart attack" and they had to turn on a dime and get serious by putting Cheney out on Fox.

Amazing that Coulter, Malkin and the liars on Fox news can make fun of "liberals/Democrats" but Howell gets some "polite" e-mails from them complaining about Milbank and she feels she needs to openly criticize him.

Milbank is really just another Media Whore...so this is the RW's way of making sure he stays that way, I guess. Or, to turn attention away from the real story of the Cheney/Armstrong Ranch influence peddling story.
