US Judge to rule on male genital mutilation
The mother says slicing off some of her son's penis will have health benefits but the pediatricians are "neutral" on the health benefits. Guess if she had a daughter she can lop off the breasts to prevent breast cancer?

Dad says it's mutilation to cut off part of his son's penis.

10. I'd like to know more
for instance, is the kid asking for the operation so he'll look like everybody else or a stepfather or someone in his life? Circumcision at eight is pretty traumatic, much more so than in an infant with an undeveloped nervous system.

Offhand, since it's so traumatic in older kids, I'd side with the dad. However, I'd side with Mom if the kid is the one who wants it. The longer you wait to do it, the worse it is.

6. I told mine he could decide
AFTER he'd watched one at the hospital. He didn't want to watch one & we didn't sign the paper & the child (now grown) has never ocmplained.

7. I am old enough to remember when all little boys were
operated on when they were first born. The judge will have some problems with this as it is a religious practice at least of one religion in this country. So he will not only have to consider the medical need for such treatment but also the religious right to practice their own beliefs. Somewhat similar to the blood transfusion argument.

9. No, the equivalent operation in a female infant would be
a hymenotomy, getting rid of the hymen to prevent pain on first intercourse later in life.

I understand there are anti circumcision fanatics. Condolences to you all. However, this is a purely personal and cultural decision on the part of the parents, so BACK OFF.

Do what you want with your own kid. Don't DARE tell anyone else what to do with theirs.

12. The 'cultural' defense is widely misused
There are no grounds to defend genital mutilation, it's a 5th century anachronism dreamed up by some decidedly perverted people

Kid can decide what kind of cosmetic operations he wants, after he reaches adulthood.

she has nothing to say on this issue.

15. I have two sons, both intact, but I have a question about this case:
In another article about this case - it SEEMS to indicate that the boy was having issues with infections. Although, the way this is worded, it is not really clear. If it was to assist in preventing painful infections, I agree that it should be done.

<snip>
The mother, a 31-year-old homemaker from Northbrook, says two doctors have recommended the procedure to prevent recurrent infections. Her ex-husband, a 49-year-old building manager who lives in Arlington Heights, calls the operation an "unnecessary amputation" that could cause his son physical and emotional harm.
